The erstwhile political epicenter of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Trakai Castle today provides a striking example of an island fortress in Europe and remains one of the country's most famous symbols. Built in several stages beginning in the 14th century, the castle fell into ruin during the 1600s; however, a major push after World War II led to its complete restoration. Cross the wooden bridge to access the castle and its massive defensive towers and gate, situated on a tiny islet just offshore from its namesake town. Within the walls lies yet another fortified bastion. Wander its multiple floors and view exhibitions displaying medieval artifacts, armor, and weapons. The site documents both the history of the castle and its role in the nation's past. Be sure to stop by the grand hall, where rulers such as national hero Vytautas held feasts and state meetings. Our Trakai tourist route planner makes visiting Trakai Castle and other Trakai attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • One of the best castles in Europe. In the midst of a very beautiful lakes. Very picturesque places and the real medieval castle. Great nature around many tourist attractions. Many animals-ducks and swans. The castle itself is large enough, there is something to see. Extremely interesting Museum exhibition. Place points of interest, even worth to come specifically here.

  • I visited the castle of Trakai in the dead of winter and found a beautiful landscape: snow everywhere and the Lake was frozen with many local skating on top. Trakai is a very charming city there is only 28 km from Vilnius and the train to there costs less than 3 euros and is the Trakai last season. It is worth visiting at all stations from what I've seen!

  • For only 6 euro this is a good spot to visit. There are three floors of displays about Lithuania's history and the castle itself. We went when it was rainy and it was nice and dry inside.
  • Castle was a great sight reflecting across the lake. The exhibits and shows inside are pretty good, with lots of information and english translations. It can be very busy in the upper castle rooms as the tour groups push past, but it's still a very nice place to visit
  • Small cozy town, the old historic capital of Lithuania, just 20 kilometers away from Vilnius. You can get the easily by bus or train and enjoy architecture of an island castle, museums and taste some traditional karaim or Lithuanian food.
  • Great castle, definately check it out from inside
  • Lots of things to see, good museum
  • Exterior is almost done but guys could make interior more ready for visitors. Some rooms don't feel wellcoming
