Siauliai Hill of Crosses, Siauliai

(4.5/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Packed with effigies and memorials thought to have begun after an uprising against the Russian Empire, Siauliai Hill of Crosses plays home to nearly 100,000 crosses and represents one of Lithuania's most well-known sights. Bulldozed several times by Soviet authorities during their rule over the country, the hill has come back to life in the decades since Lithuania's independence. Visit the hill and wander the wooden pathways winding around the mound and you'll be surrounded by crucifixes of all sizes and styles. Don't miss taking an up-close look at the thousands of types of crosses carpeting the area; often larger ones are covered in hundreds of smaller examples attached with strings, rope, and rosaries. Feel free to add one of your own if you'd like to contribute to the hill's growth. • We rented a car in Riga and wanted to go for a drive. We thought this would be a good way to spend the morning. What a surprise. Amazing place. Would definitely recommend stopping off and seeing this.
  • This small hill completely covered by thousands, probably millions of crosses of every shape and size. I got there at a particular moment for me and as a result I lived this place with a special intensity, but I think you can not leave anyone indifferent. It is not a place where only the believers feel emotionally involved and I think whilst visiting should be borne in mind that originated as a place of dissent and rebellion against a regime to witness their freedom and independence in a peaceful manner, then it was turned into a place of Christian worship, but I don't think it's this sense of place. However you alive is a strong feeling, alienating one you try walking in silence in the various peaceful paths that run through. You would find yourself to explore their own intimate sense of spirituality. On arrival there is a big parking where there are many souvenirs negotiations, bathrooms and bars. If you continue just beyond you can park freely. The site is free. If you are lucky and there is too much crowd and maybe there's a good musician who plays on the driveway you will experience an indescribable feeling
