Siauliai Hill of Crosses, Siauliai

4.4
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Siauliai
Packed with effigies and memorials thought to have begun after an uprising against the Russian Empire, Siauliai Hill of Crosses plays home to nearly 100,000 crosses and represents one of Lithuania's most well-known sights. Bulldozed several times by Soviet authorities during their rule over the country, the hill has come back to life in the decades since Lithuania's independence. Visit the hill and wander the wooden pathways winding around the mound and you'll be surrounded by crucifixes of all sizes and styles. Don't miss taking an up-close look at the thousands of types of crosses carpeting the area; often larger ones are covered in hundreds of smaller examples attached with strings, rope, and rosaries. Feel free to add one of your own if you'd like to contribute to the hill's growth. Put Siauliai Hill of Crosses at the forefront of your travel plans using our Siauliai visit planner .

  • It's a beautiful place, an emotional one. Feels at peace and a mysterious calm reigns, magic.

  • The place is very curious. As a result of some crosses put in antiquity (there are different theories about its origin), the faithful have put crosses of all sizes. Even there are stars of David with character in Hebrew. In recent years, the proliferation of tourism has led to the lack of control by what are crosses pulled by thousands. I think that regulation is required.

  • Not sure about hill of crosses. Depends if you are religious or not. It is certainly unique, but I am afraid it didn't move me.  more »

  • It is worth to know the history of the Hill before visiting it, otherwise it seems just a hill full of crosses. During the last 13 years the area where the crosses are placed has become much larger and the surrounding area is more tourist-oriented now. You will find enough sellers there who will offer you a wide range of wooden crosses. There is a parking lot for cars and buses for a small fee during day and free of charge in the late evening (if I remember correctly, after 6 p.m.) and at night. People really still leave their crosses there, just place them on some older ones or find the last free area on the ground.
  • The hill of crosses is a very spiritual area. It's also nice to visit even if you are not religion. This place is for everybody and everybody can feel the energy here. I was personally very impressed when i was reading the texts on the crosses. I spend more then 3 hours here.
  • One of the most unique places in Lithuania! you can spend hours reading crosses and signs on this hill! I recommend you to visit this attraction.
  • Interesting place to visit. To see the amount of crosses all stacked up is something to see and we'll worth a visit. Crosses added from people across the world.
  • Unique and quite bizarre. Worth a visit. Free access. Toilets and Souvenir shop nearby (if you want to add your own cross!)
