Siauliai Hill of Crosses, Siauliai
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Packed with effigies and memorials thought to have begun after an uprising against the Russian Empire, Siauliai Hill of Crosses plays home to nearly 100,000 crosses and represents one of Lithuania's most well-known sights. Bulldozed several times by Soviet authorities during their rule over the country, the hill has come back to life in the decades since Lithuania's independence. Visit the hill and wander the wooden pathways winding around the mound and you'll be surrounded by crucifixes of all sizes and styles. Don't miss taking an up-close look at the thousands of types of crosses carpeting the area; often larger ones are covered in hundreds of smaller examples attached with strings, rope, and rosaries. Feel free to add one of your own if you'd like to contribute to the hill's growth. In the 14th century, while the region belonged to the Russian Empire, the local population had revolted against the tsar that prevented families to honor their dead. The people then planted crosses on the Hill in memory of its dead. Shaved three times by the Soviets, always rebuilt. An unusual place you can't forget after seeing it!show original

A great place to visit, one of the best in Lithuania I would say! A little bit scary ar some point due to enormous number of crosses (up to 2 million) but pretty nice! Its very very very cold though! Have some warm clothes with you!

awesome site. I did not expect to find such a picturesque place in the area.
you must see it if you travel in Siauliai
Something you have never seen before. About 15.000 crosses in one place.
Awesome site and sight! No way a day trip in itself but worth the detour when going from Riga to Vilnius. Have lunch/diner in Siauliai afterwards!
