Velnių muziejus, Kaunas

3.8
#1 of 15 in Museums in Kaunas
Fortified with artifacts and pieces donated by visitors, Velnių muziejus houses more than 3,000 displays of devil depictions from cultures and regions across the globe. Originally begun by collector Antanas Zmuidzinavicius in his own home, the museum formed as a tribute after his death. Stop by the facility and explore three stories of artwork, focused primarily on carvings and sculptures featuring devils and other similar creatures of legend. Note that many are carved or grafted onto simple household items, giving them a personal quality. Be sure to keep an eye out for Zmuidzinavicius' own artwork, often illustrating ghastly scenes of violence and punishment doled out by devils upon those that have deceived; these are housed in an exhibit along with other devil-themed works from the nations of the former Soviet Union. • Of course, people tend to retain and cherish bit by bit what they dearly ... But the Museum level me terrified! While it may be meant-"horror horrible")) the unbearable smell damp, stuffy rooms, no adaptations for people with disabilities. In short, to the European level, as the moon ... Sad.

  • There are many museums in the world with strange themes people as far as I know, there is only one that is on the Devils. Interesting, but I was missing a little more description of how the devil has been cultivated (and adored) by some. It would make the exhibition to a 5-star ethnographic experience.

  • Interesting collection of devil pieces: masks, pipes, home furnishings, etc. Museum provides interesting description and history of the devil. Most interesting are its description on how the devil is perceived in Lithuanian folklore. It's 3 floors worth of display. There's an adult and a cheaper student price. No free flyers/handouts/guides, but I think I saw one for purchase. You can also join an audio tour for a price. I found the museum exit signs a bit confusing. Other than that, it was a good museum experience.
  • Unique devils museum. Audio set tour, guides, 3 floors of devil masks, statues, scultpures, etc. Worth knowledge, uncludes other countries works as well. Over 200 pieces. Some guest exhibitions on hallways. Dont miss the flat where the owner lived.
  • A bigger than you expect it to be museum. Several translations to English although most of the time don't need any translations. Just walk and appreciate
  • Unique place. Big collection of devils, collected from many countries.
  • Worth to visit in Kaunas - really amusing, unusual, and entertaining - 3 floors of different devils.

Where to stay in Kaunas

Kaunas matches its artistic and fun-loving energy with numerous stylish boutique hotels. The one surprise is that many are quite affordable without sacrificing location. If you want something more budget-friendly, this youthful city has hostels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses, within the old city or close by. To experience both the city and the natural surroundings of Kaunas, opt to stay at one of the campsites, easily accessible from town via bus and offering tents or campers to rent at very reasonable rates. Be sure to book ahead when traveling to Kaunas: the city gets quite busy in the summer months, and the lack of big hotels means the small ones fill up fast.
