History Museum Museum
Learn about traditional rural life in Lithuania at Rumsiskes Open-Air Museum. Stretching 175 hectares (432 acres), it is one of the largest museums of its type in Europe and explores the four main ethnographic regions of the country: Aukštaitija, Samogitia, Dzūkija, and Suvalkija. There are about 140 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries grouped into farmsteads, villages, and towns. Inside, the restored interiors and furnishings reflect the popular styles of the time from different social classes. Once you've finished visiting the houses, stroll among the beehives, wells, flower gardens, orchards, and monuments for further insights into the way people lived here. You can approach staff with any questions about Lithuanian customs and culture. You will have to walk a significant distance to experience all the museum has to offer, so wear sensible shoes. • It's a nice museum, just be aware that expositions close at 6pm, while you can wander around the grounds until 8. It's not mentioned anywhere so we weren't able to see all. Also, don't expect good foo...  more »
  • This museum presents life-size way different types of habitats Lithuanians. It reconstructs entire villages of the 18 th century until 1930. The houses are furnished and the farm outbuildings contain the tools of yesteryear. It is poorly documented and the information in English are very basic, which creates a legitimate frustration. Could also do better about the maintenance of the Park in which buildings threaten ruins.

Where to stay in Kaunas

Kaunas matches its artistic and fun-loving energy with numerous stylish boutique hotels. The one surprise is that many are quite affordable without sacrificing location. If you want something more budget-friendly, this youthful city has hostels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses, within the old city or close by. To experience both the city and the natural surroundings of Kaunas, opt to stay at one of the campsites, easily accessible from town via bus and offering tents or campers to rent at very reasonable rates. Be sure to book ahead when traveling to Kaunas: the city gets quite busy in the summer months, and the lack of big hotels means the small ones fill up fast.
