Old Town Kaunas, Kaunas

4.0
Resting at the confluence of two key rivers, Old Town Kaunas represents the medieval heart and architectural focal point of the city. Spread across 144 hectares (356 acres), the historic center comprises numerous buildings of different styles, ranging from Gothic to Baroque, and houses many of the city's major structures like the town hall and cathedral. Wander the cobbled streets and explore the winding alleyways. You'll discover a number of Lithuanian restaurants, museums, and religious buildings along the way, complemented by a backdrop of pastel colors and cathedral spires. Don't miss the tower of Kaunas castle, which guards the banks of the Neris: it's a surviving medieval remnant that you can access and climb. • Odd but interesting city breaks. Easy and cheap to fly from Copenhagen. Old city with many attractions. Prices on good hotels and good food is very low. Friendly people and no crime. Not much tourists either. Bus adapters are recommended to get around the city. You can take the local bus from the Airport (takes some time) but the hotel shuttle service is the best. Walk around the old town which is still not restored, and visit churches, museums, Castle. Don't miss the ninth Fort outside the town. Book a guide for the entire facility. Local buses go there. The city's website (Tourist Office) has helpful information. Great modern shopping malls (Acropolis) in the city. Large University so young have good language skills. Otherwise you can generally no language. A nice excursion is to take the train to Vilnius. Very good cars, and from the second floor to get a good view. In conclusion-hit can return.

  • Very nice place, with many restaurants and pubs. It is worth to see both in the days and at night when the town hall and buildings are highlighted.  more »

Where to stay in Kaunas

Kaunas matches its artistic and fun-loving energy with numerous stylish boutique hotels. The one surprise is that many are quite affordable without sacrificing location. If you want something more budget-friendly, this youthful city has hostels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses, within the old city or close by. To experience both the city and the natural surroundings of Kaunas, opt to stay at one of the campsites, easily accessible from town via bus and offering tents or campers to rent at very reasonable rates. Be sure to book ahead when traveling to Kaunas: the city gets quite busy in the summer months, and the lack of big hotels means the small ones fill up fast.
