Ninth Fort, Kaunas

4.6
Originally constructed as part of the Kaunas Fortress, Ninth Fort now serves as a museum dedicated to the atrocities committed here during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, and to its past role as an important stronghold. The building of the fort began in 1902 and was not completed until the night before the outbreak of World War I. Throughout the Soviet period of 1940 to 1941, the fort was used to house political prisoners before shipping them off to Siberia. During the Holocaust, it served as a place of mass murder, with over 30,000 Jews and 10,000 foreigners being executed here, in what came to be known as the Kaunas Massacre. Visit the memorial located on the grounds and pay your respects to the victims who died here. Learn more about the events that took place in the fort through the museum exhibits, displaying artifacts and historical records. • Very interesting exhebition. However, these "guards" watching every single step made me feel a bit like an inmate. One of them even turned off the artillery sound simulator, after I tried it out, giving me a look, that could kill. Rest was all good, so still four stars.
  • Definitely worth seeing. A lot of history. The place is big and it takes quite a while to walk trough all the rooms. There are 2 buildings - first with amazing glass work, art pieces and photos; second is the place where you can see the cells, prisoners things and have a look at how they lived, where they slept, etc.
  • Contains basically three separate expositions. In same building with ticket office is occupation museum, some interesting stuff there, including avesome stained glass sculptures. In ninth fort itself two separate expositions - history of ninth fort and development of Kaunas city fortification line and museum of Holocaust. Holocaust part is rather depressing with all those photos and belongings of murdered people, but everyone should see it, to understand the cruelty and insanity of fascism.
  • It's a museum complex with museum, fort, a mass execution site and a Holocaust Memorial for the Jews. It's a little bit outside the city and we paid around €6 for Bolt taxi. There is also a bus, need to walk around 10mins to the bus stop, not that frequent though. Museum was closed on the day we went, but the views of the memorial from the top of the fort were splendid. One can easily walk on the grass covered top of the fort.
  • A fantastic memorial to visit with respect in memory of all the lives lost in this place. The monumental sculpture in a Brutism aesthetic is a great representation of the innovative aesthetic from the URSS. A import historical site to visit. The negative aspects. The access and connection to this site are not the best for travelers.
