Ninth Fort, Kaunas

(4.6/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Originally constructed as part of the Kaunas Fortress, Ninth Fort now serves as a museum dedicated to the atrocities committed here during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, and to its past role as an important stronghold. The building of the fort began in 1902 and was not completed until the night before the outbreak of World War I. Throughout the Soviet period of 1940 to 1941, the fort was used to house political prisoners before shipping them off to Siberia. During the Holocaust, it served as a place of mass murder, with over 30,000 Jews and 10,000 foreigners being executed here, in what came to be known as the Kaunas Massacre. Visit the memorial located on the grounds and pay your respects to the victims who died here. Learn more about the events that took place in the fort through the museum exhibits, displaying artifacts and historical records. • Those who are interested in the history of the second world war, here is boring. All. Better to spend your time in MEGA, which is very close.

  • Its very interesting historical place, where you can see and feel the effects of the Second World War
  • Ninth Fort is well worth a visit, full of interesting and välberättad history. We used audio guide and got a good guided tour around the various objects and images. It gave a good picture of events mixed with interesting human portrait. Cost 3 euros in admission and 7-8 euro in taxi ride from the old town of Kaunas. It is extremely cold in place to dress properly for a visit.

  • Very beautiful place, peaceful and relaxing tours available! Not expensive as well.! Definitely will going back with more friends from Latvia Germany Estonia and Ukraine! Good bless u all.!
  • amazing!!! best to visit on a warm day and definitely pay that little extra for a guide for more of a better experience!!!!
  • A lot of important history here everyone should go check out in there life time.sad but breaktaking.the satue is beautiful.
  • A gorgeous view of architecture and a quieter side of Kaunas. Definitely climbable, yet not in dress shoes! It was such a bummer. The area is open to the public, and there is a museum as well.
  • I would give an extra star if i could. Really great place! Though hire a guide is a must and you get access to additional underground tunnels.
