Ninth Fort, Kaunas
(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Originally constructed as part of the Kaunas Fortress, Ninth Fort now serves as a museum dedicated to the atrocities committed here during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, and to its past role as an important stronghold. The building of the fort began in 1902 and was not completed until the night before the outbreak of World War I. Throughout the Soviet period of 1940 to 1941, the fort was used to house political prisoners before shipping them off to Siberia. During the Holocaust, it served as a place of mass murder, with over 30,000 Jews and 10,000 foreigners being executed here, in what came to be known as the Kaunas Massacre. Visit the memorial located on the grounds and pay your respects to the victims who died here. Learn more about the events that took place in the fort through the museum exhibits, displaying artifacts and historical records. • The Ninth Fort in Kaunas, Lithuania is fabulous! It is full of history and GREAT for "history buffs" like myself. The fort was built in 1913 when Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire. Our guide wa...  more »
  • Easy to get to by bus 23. Children of 7 years think it was exciting when it says things promote dating back from the 2 world war. Exchanged between cells with physical things and spaces with images and text. You get a great insight into the story. We used just about 3 hours. It has closed on Mondays.

  • Must-see. Interesting story, but preferably with Russian guide, tried to sort it out yourself, but not everything is understandable.

  • amazing!!! best to visit on a warm day and definitely pay that little extra for a guide for more of a better experience!!!!
  • A lot of important history here everyone should go check out in there life time.sad but breaktaking.the satue is beautiful.
  • A gorgeous view of architecture and a quieter side of Kaunas. Definitely climbable, yet not in dress shoes! It was such a bummer. The area is open to the public, and there is a museum as well.
  • I would give an extra star if i could. Really great place! Though hire a guide is a must and you get access to additional underground tunnels.
