Ninth Fort, Kaunas

4.6
Originally constructed as part of the Kaunas Fortress, Ninth Fort now serves as a museum dedicated to the atrocities committed here during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, and to its past role as an important stronghold. The building of the fort began in 1902 and was not completed until the night before the outbreak of World War I. Throughout the Soviet period of 1940 to 1941, the fort was used to house political prisoners before shipping them off to Siberia. During the Holocaust, it served as a place of mass murder, with over 30,000 Jews and 10,000 foreigners being executed here, in what came to be known as the Kaunas Massacre. Visit the memorial located on the grounds and pay your respects to the victims who died here. Learn more about the events that took place in the fort through the museum exhibits, displaying artifacts and historical records. • Now 2 x this fort visited. The 1st time with a tour guide, the second time without it. Advantage of a guide is that you also can come in all other pieces of the fort and also what deeper in the cellars. The guides give a good story (in English). The museum is also at the price. Here you can see many pictures and backgrounds about the nazi era and the Soviet time. For winter visitors: there is no heating in the buildings!

  • Really interesting place and excellent value for money. The end 40 minute tour was very informative and highly recommended. Definitely worth a visit.  more »
  • Powerful military structure. First room exposure, then you go outside and walk about 100 meters to the Fort. Very cold, damp and gloomy. The Museum is not adapted for Russian speakers. Free parking and nearby restrooms in the Museum building. The exposition very interesting words to describe long so to enclose a photo for illustration purposes only. In my opinion, children visiting the Museum will be uninteresting.

  • Awesome place, looks nice. A great sight to see for the whole family. Take your friends and kids there. And if you have a chance, get a guide. You'll experience something you haven't before.
  • Most beautiful and sad place at the same time! We just had stroll around at the sunset and it was great!
  • Very interesting. Recommend doing it as a guided tour as you get to see parts you would not be allowed to see on your own.
  • Museum for memorizing the horror of the middle war era Jewish genocide. You will feel the atmosphere of that time!
  • Great experience, good place to learn about history of lithuania.
