Ninth Fort, Kaunas

4.6
Originally constructed as part of the Kaunas Fortress, Ninth Fort now serves as a museum dedicated to the atrocities committed here during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, and to its past role as an important stronghold. The building of the fort began in 1902 and was not completed until the night before the outbreak of World War I. Throughout the Soviet period of 1940 to 1941, the fort was used to house political prisoners before shipping them off to Siberia. During the Holocaust, it served as a place of mass murder, with over 30,000 Jews and 10,000 foreigners being executed here, in what came to be known as the Kaunas Massacre. Visit the memorial located on the grounds and pay your respects to the victims who died here. Learn more about the events that took place in the fort through the museum exhibits, displaying artifacts and historical records. • Memorial that perhaps because of its location is not very popular. Well worth a visit to understand the horrors of war and to honor all people who in this place have suffered violence. Visit buy more value if made with the local guide, which as far as we are concerned we could not use due to the limited time available.

  • Until visiting Lithuania, we knew little of its history. Ninth Fort is an incredible place to visit to learn of the horrors the citizens have endured. Having only two hours to spend there didn’t reall...  more »

  • Very interesting, takes a whole day though. Not recommended for young children, and a guide is highly recommended
  • Light One Candle, A Survivor's Tale from Lithuania to Jerusalem – Solly Ganor. You can download this book on Google Play Books. Suggested reading for anyone planning on visiting the Ninth Fort, as well as for anyone who has already made the visit. As a survivor, Mr. Ganor presents us with a more accurate history as to what really took place at the Ninth Fort during the Jewish persecution, which was not only fueled by the Nazis, but many locals, as well, who didn't need coercion to carry out acts of murder, and brutality towards their fellow men, women, and children. I think it would be nice to offer flowers, and if allowed, hold a candle, in remembrance for those who perished, and make prayers that these atrocities never happen again.
  • A must visit. Some incredible true stories of survivors from all sides, and gives an insight into the dark side of history. Highly recommended.
  • Great place for short walk combining with history and sightseeing. Museum is really interesting as well.
  • Historical museum and fort, beautiful big monument, urban green grass and of course big parking place for cars.

Where to stay in Kaunas

Kaunas matches its artistic and fun-loving energy with numerous stylish boutique hotels. The one surprise is that many are quite affordable without sacrificing location. If you want something more budget-friendly, this youthful city has hostels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses, within the old city or close by. To experience both the city and the natural surroundings of Kaunas, opt to stay at one of the campsites, easily accessible from town via bus and offering tents or campers to rent at very reasonable rates. Be sure to book ahead when traveling to Kaunas: the city gets quite busy in the summer months, and the lack of big hotels means the small ones fill up fast.
