Ninth Fort, Kaunas

(4.6/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Originally constructed as part of the Kaunas Fortress, Ninth Fort now serves as a museum dedicated to the atrocities committed here during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, and to its past role as an important stronghold. The building of the fort began in 1902 and was not completed until the night before the outbreak of World War I. Throughout the Soviet period of 1940 to 1941, the fort was used to house political prisoners before shipping them off to Siberia. During the Holocaust, it served as a place of mass murder, with over 30,000 Jews and 10,000 foreigners being executed here, in what came to be known as the Kaunas Massacre. Visit the memorial located on the grounds and pay your respects to the victims who died here. Learn more about the events that took place in the fort through the museum exhibits, displaying artifacts and historical records. • Image portrayal there deficient. Only exit on the highway is signposted and turn left after questioning the Navi. Caution has extreme potholes road. To understand the country and the people you have in the included Museum. The artwork out there alone is worth. Impressive

  • Really learned a lot from our visit here. The audio tour was free and really helped us to understand the exhibits. If you visit Kaunas, you should visit.  more »

  • A lot of important history here everyone should go check out in there life time.sad but breaktaking.the satue is beautiful.
  • A gorgeous view of architecture and a quieter side of Kaunas. Definitely climbable, yet not in dress shoes! It was such a bummer. The area is open to the public, and there is a museum as well.
  • I would give an extra star if i could. Really great place! Though hire a guide is a must and you get access to additional underground tunnels.
