Kaunas Castle, Kaunas

3.5
#2 of 12 in Historic Sites in Kaunas
Located at the edge of old town Kaunas, Kaunas Castle represents a Gothic-style castle thought to have been built during the mid-14th century. The castle served as a strategic military outpost that guarded nearby cities and the roads between important trade routes. By the start of the 21st century, only approximately a third of the original castle remained intact. It was renovated in 2011, but some of the original walls remain. Climb the stairs to the upper levels for expansive views of the surrounding town and scenery. You can walk within the walls for free, or pay to go into the round tower where you'll find an art gallery. Trakai Castle stand on a similar structure but a very small part of the kaldırılabilmiş. Still, if you have spare time. In the style of a typical Baltic fortress construction.

If you've been to other castles in the Baltics, just view this castle from outside. The €2.5 entry cost allows you to go down to a dungeon. The ladders down to the dungeon are not for everybody. There...  more »

Conservative talk about the history of Lithuania of of it as a quiet atmosphere. It may be just better than Castle and the ruins of a castle, old town, City Hall square and only a short walk, around other churches with stop. Entrance fee is required to carefully look inside.

Small-ish castle, but interesting. Check out the ghost in the cellar (it's actually a projection, but cool!)

Old ruins of the Kaunas castle (not much left), but the area around it is worth exploring, taking a walk around with a coffee is a good option.

This is essentially a small sliver of the castle which used to stand here. Part of it was lost to time, most of it was demolished by the history-hating Soviets. Nevertheless, the castle has been reconstructed nicely and offers some good views of the river and city. It's worth a visit for sure.

If you visit Kaunas, necessary to visit the very beginning of the city - castle. Even maybe to meet local ghost if you are lucky

Quite a small tour, but worth while combined with a walk along the rivers and old town.

Where to stay in Kaunas

Kaunas matches its artistic and fun-loving energy with numerous stylish boutique hotels. The one surprise is that many are quite affordable without sacrificing location. If you want something more budget-friendly, this youthful city has hostels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses, within the old city or close by. To experience both the city and the natural surroundings of Kaunas, opt to stay at one of the campsites, easily accessible from town via bus and offering tents or campers to rent at very reasonable rates. Be sure to book ahead when traveling to Kaunas: the city gets quite busy in the summer months, and the lack of big hotels means the small ones fill up fast.
