Grutas Park, Druskininkai

#1 of 6 in Parks in Druskininkai
At Grutas Park, walk through a recreated Soviet prison camp and view Communist-era statues and relics to learn more about this period in Lithuania's past. The park got its start after the country gained its independence in 1990, when many Soviet statues were removed and dumped in various places. The founder aimed to bring these statues together in one place, and founded an attraction revolving around this history that still remains controversial today. The 86 statues are organized into groupings, such as the Totalitarian Sphere and the Terror Sphere, featuring major Communist leaders from Lithuania and other countries. Notice the barbed wire, guard towers, and the train car used to transport people to Gulags. You can take a tour to receive more in-depth information on each statue and exhibit. There is also a mini zoo located on the property and a cafe that serves Soviet food. For Grutas Park and beyond, use our Druskininkai trip planner to get the most from your Druskininkai vacation.

  • Arrived only to be turned away as we had a dog with us (mini schnauzer) as some visitors walking the paths might be afraid of dogs...(parking lot was empty) Found this quite absurd.  more »

  • Visited this great park in summer 2018. Excellent collection of soviet statues in a well designed park, and many interesting exhibits in the buildings, with some great soviet memorabilia. A difficult history for many Lithuanians but I’m glad they preserved some of it.
  • A huge place and not the one to be rushed. Spent a whole day just slowly walking around, the nature is beautiful, lots of interesting pieces of history to check out, absolutely loved it.
  • Very interesting. Could need a leaflet in English. A bit biased towards the Soviet period, though. As a historian I would suggest a more balanced description including the positive sides and facts about the communist times. As well as the Lithuanian history. Julie Brink
  • Pretty nice and renewed place after last time I have been. Recommending to visit.
  • I liked the old statues and the buildings, filled with interesting items, posters and communist art. The zoo was insane though. The animals were under horrible living conditions. Tiny cages, no plants or rocks, just a cage and the ground for them to sit. Must be awful for the animals.
