Burg Gutenberg, Balzers

See the medieval Burg Gutenberg, where archeological digs have uncovered the 12 cm (5 in) Mars von Gutenberg figurine. The hillside has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The castle is perched on a hill about 70 m (230 ft) above the nearby village. Park at the foot of the hill, and climb a path that leads through vineyards up to the castle. The short walk provides views of the neighboring countryside and castle ruins. You can visit the castle's chapel and its rose garden. The bailey is open throughout the year, but the castle interior is closed for visitors. Guided tours need to be scheduled in advance. • Worth the walk in the spiral mountain to the Castle. Pity it was closed. However, the view is memorable!

  • The castle was initially a church. During its restoration between 1905 and 1912, it was converted into a Castle. Compared to Vaduz Castle (the residence of the Prince and his family) Gutenberg Castle ...  more »
  • After getting to find the path of ascent (which was very poorly signposted), there is a good hike uphill. The road goes through some stunning vineyards and views as you're reaching the top they are really spectacular, but the disappointment you get when, after climbing up there, you are fully closed is very large. A simple sign of notice. For luck, and thanks to that we went up to the Castle, we find a small church in Balzers very nice, right at the foot of the Castle and surrounded by a curious cemetery. For me one of the places with most charming of Liechtenstein.

  • Beautiful place, it was a bit of a challenge finding the route (no signs (that we could understand) showing the way). When we got there, the Castle was closed. I guess our visit was out of season? Not sure, but as a monolingual English speaker, we simply knew the castle wasn't open today. Otherwise, the view from the top was gorgeous!
  • It is a good place to visit but you need to arrange your visit proper if you need to visit inside Schloss. Very well preserved place. The town is very proud of its Schloss. There is a little hiking trail from the Schloss to the church below at the village. Beautiful!
  • Didn't get to go inside but had a beautiful little walk around the outside. Looks like u could do some longer hikes from here.
  • Great courtyard to relax and take in the view of the mountains
  • Interesting castle with also interesting history. The castle had also very bad period of him history when was all areal in ruins situation. But after all areal bought Egon Rheinberger architect from Austria. Which was interested of beauty that castle and landscape around as me. And all areal and the castle reconstructed. In him testament let all areal for peoples in town. So today is owner Balzers town. The courtyard is open for visitors every day in tourist season from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. The castle's chapel and rose garden only in summer. But for excursion inside the castle is important ask the town hall.
