American University of Beirut, Beirut

4.5
Explore the historic buildings and well-manicured tropical gardens of American University of Beirut, a picturesque campus perched on a promontory overlooking Zaitunay Bay. Set up by U.S. missionaries as Syrian Protestant College, the university initially focused on medical training; today, the secular institution ranks among the nation's top universities. Spanning 25 hectares (61 acres) of private land, the campus features a private beach, a bird sanctuary, a botanical garden, and a soccer field. Visit the archeological museum to see a substantial collection of artifacts and a stone chapel. Guarded by private security, the university offers campus tours, which you can arrange on the website.
