Set up by U.S. missionaries as Syrian Protestant College, the university initially focused on medical training; today, the secular institution ranks among the nation's top universities. Spanning 25 hectares (61 acres) of private land, the campus features a private beach, a bird sanctuary, a botanical garden, and a soccer field. Where to stay in Beirut

The capital city, Beirut offers a great variety of accommodations across its many lively districts. Downtown possesses a good number of hotels and hostels, close to the main sightseeing spots, and rich in shops and services. Hamra district has a similarly large number of places to stay, with hotels located along the main stylish boulevards, and hostels and guesthouses to be found on the connecting side streets. Ain El Mraiseh district offers a good alternative for those wanting to get a room overlooking the Mediterranean coast.
