Turaida Castle, Sigulda

4.3
Walk along the castle ramparts and explore the elements of medieval building at Turaida Castle, which means "Thor's garden" in the language of the ancient inhabitants. The red-brick castle is a cultural landmark with a special protection status. Archbishop of Riga requested the building be constructed for an order of Crusaders in 1214. As you tour the building, you'll see the original surviving fragments of a defensive wall, the main tower, a semi-rounded tower, and the western section. Learn about the history and the restoration process at exhibits inside the restored buildings. You can climb the main tower for a view of the valley. • A small castle, but quite interesting. Were there with friends in January, lucky with the weather and take a tour. Guide all of us very interesting told and shown. If yourself examined it, absolutely would not have impressed. And nothing interesting.

  • The castle isn’t extremely impressive but the historical exhibition is insightful. The grounds surrounding the castle are pretty. The site was made more charming perhaps by the blanket of snow coverin...  more »
  • The Turaida Castle is the centerpiece of a beautiful naturalistic-Archaeological Park and cured. We went in a gloomy day of April and the weather has spoiled for anything our ride! The only draw back is how to get there: If you don't have a car, you can still opt for a nice walk in the woods or you can take the bus traveling from the main square of Sigulda. In any case worth a visit!!

  • The recently reconstructed medieval castle in Turaida. Founded in 1214. No such big castle comparing to other similar castles. However the reconstruction continuously in progress for many years. And every year the site gets some new piece of recovered items. There are several exhibition rooms and watch tower.
  • Gorgeous castle with museum inside. From the tower there is a good view of the surrounding parts of the Gauja National Park. And the admission to the entire compound is really low.
  • Beautifully restored and maintained castle and grounds. It is full of history and quite informative. A marvellous view of the surrounding forest from the tower.
  • Beautiful old castle nestled on the top of the hill at Turaida. Great views of the river from the tower and a few interesting exhibits to see. Only criticism would be that the restoration work isn't very sympathetic...
  • Not very well-groomed historical place, too crowded and all the greenery trampled. Beautifully during the "golden autumn", BUT even a few days after the rains everywhere terrible dirt. Is it so hard to get normal tracks or gangways?! Yes, the valley of the Dains is quite beautiful, but it's all drowning in the awful dirt! Is that normal for one of the oldest and most visited points of interest in the region?!
