Turaida Castle, Sigulda

4.3
Walk along the castle ramparts and explore the elements of medieval building at Turaida Castle, which means "Thor's garden" in the language of the ancient inhabitants. The red-brick castle is a cultural landmark with a special protection status. Archbishop of Riga requested the building be constructed for an order of Crusaders in 1214. As you tour the building, you'll see the original surviving fragments of a defensive wall, the main tower, a semi-rounded tower, and the western section. Learn about the history and the restoration process at exhibits inside the restored buildings. You can climb the main tower for a view of the valley. • Sigulda is a beautiful town with its marvellous castle. Take time to climb up to the tower with the highest point to admire the view. It is quite a walk from the drop-off and the ground is uneven so b...  more »
  • The Turaida Castle grounds are very well maintained and the castle restoration has been really well done. As with Sigulda castle, the views from the tower are exceptional, especially in Autumn. Allow ...  more »
  • Were fought during the summer. To the right the castle itself, and on the left side parking and souvenirs for guests Turaidy our Latvian style, pottery and glass, Castle Museum itself passed pretty quickly, but on the observation deck, TU that left the castle itself climbed with pleasure, though there and it was pretty cool, the wind whistle in all cracks, but the view of the Gauja river, Sigulda-stunning, and you directly to the Castle fed pancake with jam in national costumes and children beyond the purely symbolic present Archer throws bow and arrow, everyone can experience the happiness of Robin Hood! :-)

  • Very interesting castle complex. Worth a visit. Staff are not very friendly and closing times are different for each part of the complex. The main castle closes at 20h, but you can't access many of the exhibitions after 18h.
  • It is pretty Cool to see it and climb the huge tower there, but the castle was quite small so after half an hour you will be pretty much done and have seen everything. And you can do archery there if you are lucky and come at good time.
  • Very large grounds including a sculpture park which is great to meander through. The Castle itself is heavily reconstructed, but gives a good concept of what it would have been in its original form, with an extensive amount of historical information given.
  • Amazing park and castle, through not very child friendly. we visited this place during our visit in Latvia, and its pity to see that not many places are suitable or friendly to kids. My boys are 6 and 4 years old, the only activity they enjoyed was arrow shooting, as in rest of the places they were not allowed to touch anything. At the shops outside of museum we were even shouted at and called names, ashamed I understand Latvian language and happy my kids didn't understand why that particular lady was so aggressive. However this place deffo worst to visit, but with older kids. Ladies in the shops on car park extremely rude. Giving one star for museum settings itself, and one star for for guy who assisted us at arriw shooting.
  • A well preserved castle in a beautiful garden/forest setting. Lots to see if able to spend time roaming around. Manual wheelchairs available for those with mobility problems.
