Turaida Castle, Sigulda

4.2
Walk along the castle ramparts and explore the elements of medieval building at Turaida Castle, which means "Thor's garden" in the language of the ancient inhabitants. The red-brick castle is a cultural landmark with a special protection status. Archbishop of Riga requested the building be constructed for an order of Crusaders in 1214. As you tour the building, you'll see the original surviving fragments of a defensive wall, the main tower, a semi-rounded tower, and the western section. Learn about the history and the restoration process at exhibits inside the restored buildings. You can climb the main tower for a view of the valley. • We really enjoyed the experience, but there were rather a lot of steps to climb and we wearied easily as it was a cold day. Better in warm weather when there is no mist.  more »
  • You can see this caslte for miles around and it is really worth going inside. The engineering and design is impressive and the views from the tower are breathtaking! A good amount of detail about the....  more »
  • Worthwhile going into the park as there is so much to see even in winter. You can go up the tower for fabulous views of the surroundings. So pretty.  more »

  • It's cheap and really quite good, the castle is very impressive and the grounds are lovely. The entry price is worth it for the tower alone, great views from the top, I just hope for better weather for you than on the day I was there. There's a separate exhibit that was free on the day I was there, but is usually €3 extra - this didn't impress, as there was a lot to read, and not much to see. It's very new though, so they need to pay for it somehow!
  • A great spot to see something different. The place is massive and lots of variety to explore. A garden with lots of modern carves rock statues in a backdrop of nature, A small history museum, and a large castle ruins to explore. Enjoyed...
  • Great castle experience! You can go all the way to the top of the tower without a guide and you can explore the entire castle grounds even outside of the castle. This is better than other Baltic castles. The price is reasonable. There are a few museums on the grounds that are worth visiting to learn more about the history of the area.
  • Very beautiful and colorful place and castle. Go visit it. I do not like the fact that absolutely all parking places around the castle are for 1.5 euro fee. But this is the only negative aspect that does mot relate to castle and surroundings. Recommended to visit.
  • Very scenic views from this place. Interesting llace to visit. Be prepeared to use narrow stairs up to the top of the tower no elevator available.
