Salaspils Memorial Ensemble, Salaspils

Historic Site Educational Site
In a quiet forest sits Salaspils Memorial Ensemble, created in memory of thousands who died in a concentration camp at this site. Menacing dark-gray stone statues represent suffering men, women, and children. A large marble block marks a massive grave while a metronome beats from under the ground, simulating heartbeats. Look for numerous toys scattered around the yard, a reminder of the children who perished here from hunger, cold, and disease. See Salaspils Memorial Ensemble and all Salaspils has to offer by arranging your trip with our Salaspils vacation route planner.

  • Really worth the visit. The memorial is beautifully done. 5 stars if a bit more historical information had been available locally in English. So bring your guide book.  more »

  • Moving and meditative place ........ the recently placed candies and flowers left in the little cage that forms part of the slab that marks the children's camp had me in tears. Awesome sculptures as well and the wooded surrounds are beautiful. Not for the faint hearted but a very intense experience.
  • There is strange atmosphere/feeling.
  • The eeriest monument ensemble in Latvia with heart beat sound now restored.
  • Close to Riga by car, free parking, a great Soviet era sight.
  • Eerie but incredibly moving.
