  • Went to a concert by Richard Galliano last night at the Great Guild Hall, Riga. We had seats in the balcony and there are a lot of stairs to climb. Near the top, we hand our tickets to one of a group of young girls. An elderly badly dressed woman comes down the stairs and insists that we redescend to the cloakroom on the basement floor to leave our coats, the implication being that we are not sufficiently well-dressed to attend the concert. I have no intention of descending all the stairs again, so I take off my body-warmer and put it in my backpack and my wife does the same with her jacket. The snooty woman has gone down the stairs, presumably to bother somebody else. We re-present ourselves to the young girls, and I say, "Is this all right or do you want me to take off my sweater too?" We finally gain admittance. I do not think this is any way to treat foreign visitors to Riga. The snooty woman took us by surprise - we weren't prepared for such arrogance. In retrospect, I would have told the woman to give us our money back since we weren't deemed fit to enter the hall, and we would have spent our money elsewhere. Concert nothing special.
  • Such a beautiful place. The inside is breathtaking and often nice events take place here.

  • Nice place for special events
  • Very convenient location to enjoy the concert-beautiful, very interesting and historic Interior.
