  • The outer impression of a small castle is continued inside. The entrance hall, the staircase and the upper room and the great Hall are magnificently decorated with wood carvings, Linoltapeten, murals/frescos and stained glass (stained glass). In the small Guild craftsmen have joined forces. The trades/guilds are represented in the many beautiful stained glass Windows. The wise, German sayings in the arches above the passageways/doors are particularly interesting, such as E.g. "patience, reason and time, makes possible the impossible". This and more proverbs are included in addition to the comprehensive history, as well as tables and graphs in the German-speaking 149-side book by Alexander Friedrich Neuland - "brief history of the Riga small Guild", which is available only at the box office. An ISBN and a Publisher is not specified in the book. Also, in any case, and a look at the book well worth a visit.

  • It is a very pretty building in Old Riga. We did not go inside but it looks like a miniature castle from the outside.  more »
  • During a walk of the old town there are so many architecturally beautiful buildings to see. This castle like building was built in the mid 1800's, in the neo-gothic style. The building is not open to ...  more »

  • Went to a concert by Richard Galliano last night at the Great Guild Hall, Riga. We had seats in the balcony and there are a lot of stairs to climb. Near the top, we hand our tickets to one of a group of young girls. An elderly badly dressed woman comes down the stairs and insists that we redescend to the cloakroom on the basement floor to leave our coats, the implication being that we are not sufficiently well-dressed to attend the concert. I have no intention of descending all the stairs again, so I take off my body-warmer and put it in my backpack and my wife does the same with her jacket. The snooty woman has gone down the stairs, presumably to bother somebody else. We re-present ourselves to the young girls, and I say, "Is this all right or do you want me to take off my sweater too?" We finally gain admittance. I do not think this is any way to treat foreign visitors to Riga. The snooty woman took us by surprise - we weren't prepared for such arrogance. In retrospect, I would have told the woman to give us our money back since we weren't deemed fit to enter the hall, and we would have spent our money elsewhere. Concert nothing special.
  • Such a beautiful place. The inside is breathtaking and often nice events take place here.
  • Very beautiful building.
  • Nice place for special events
  • Very convenient location to enjoy the concert-beautiful, very interesting and historic Interior.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
