Swedish Gate (Zviedru Varti), Riga

Landmark Tourist Spot
Walk under Swedish Gate (Zviedru Varti), the only remaining old gate of the city, which once separated the town from the outside barracks. Built through the fortress in 1689, the gate had a rather ambiguous purpose. According to some records, the archway was constructed in the name of Scandinavian occupation; others believe it served as a simple passage to the outside houses; still others claim that a rich merchant who owned the area where the wall was built decided to open a passage through it, thus avoiding paying taxes when entering the city with his goods. Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.

  • A lovely place to have lunch with your colleagues, unless you're more than 4 people. The place is really tiny and it's best to visit in small quantities. Other than that: great food, friendly staff and welcoming prices.
  • I am Swedish, therefore I liked this. Had I been of any other nationality I wouldn't have cared. It is a "hole in the wall" . Literally.
  • Beautiful gate with nice surroundings. There are a lot of pretty cafes just near it, if you get tired in the old town you may have a seat and enjoy the time with full of history!
  • With a guid this would probably be nicer to visit.
  • Important part of Riga's history.
