Swedish Gate (Zviedru Varti), Riga

3.5
#45 of 266 in Things to do in Riga
Walk under Swedish Gate (Zviedru Varti), the only remaining old gate of the city, which once separated the town from the outside barracks. Built through the fortress in 1689, the gate had a rather ambiguous purpose. According to some records, the archway was constructed in the name of Scandinavian occupation; others believe it served as a simple passage to the outside houses; still others claim that a rich merchant who owned the area where the wall was built decided to open a passage through it, thus avoiding paying taxes when entering the city with his goods. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Riga holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Swedish Gate (Zviedru Varti) and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Sweden goal is on the northern edge of the historic old town of Riga was between the Latvian Museum and the Jacobs barracks. From the freedom monument from being in less than five minutes walking. Sweden goal is the only surviving of the eight gates that once were in the city walls. It was built in 1698 during the Swedish reign in the city walls, after they had lost their original meaning on the basis of new fortifications.  The door is really impressive or spectacular, but nice to look at.

  • Of course, the Swedish gate is a monument to the history of bygone days. About the time when the fortress city of carefully guarded and local people have there limited access. Missed only grocery carts and building materials. But it is also a love story of Latvian girls and Swedish soldier. It is believed that their walled up within the walls of the gate, opposite each other, and sometimes there heard their voices. And that means that they have passed the test of time and through love found the way into the future. Legend for more than 400 years and it exists. And in this place a unique okustika. Here you can often hear the flute and violin and lute. They sound very good-with echoes of eternal love. Which always has a future. So there's a lot of lovers from around the world who believe that if you visit this place from nothing can separate.

  • Strolling through the old town it is not possible to pass them. But you can not notice very small and inconspicuous. Very cute little spot. Very often seen in the paintings of local artists. After passing through them will come to a small street from which blows as the middle ages. Around there are cafes and souvenir shops. Where in addition to souvenirs, you can taste the Riga Balsam and eat confectionery. All in all a pretty place. Be sure to take a walk to the gate.

  • A lovely place to have lunch with your colleagues, unless you're more than 4 people. The place is really tiny and it's best to visit in small quantities. Other than that: great food, friendly staff and welcoming prices.
  • Laid back environment with nice food and friendly staff. Small and cozy, great when you want to "get away" from the crowded tourist spots.
  • Cozy place for a quick bite for a good price in city center of Riga.
  • I am Swedish, therefore I liked this. Had I been of any other nationality I wouldn't have cared. It is a "hole in the wall" . Literally.
  • Beautiful gate with nice surroundings. There are a lot of pretty cafes just near it, if you get tired in the old town you may have a seat and enjoy the time with full of history!

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
