Rīgas vēstures un kuģniecības muzejs/ Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, Riga

4.1
#10 of 103 in Museums in Latvia
Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation is housed by the Riga Dom Cathedral ensemble in the heart of the Old Riga, Latvia. It originated in 1773 as a private collection of Nikolaus von Himsel, a Riga doctor and, being one of the oldest museums in Europe, over the centuries it has grown into the largest collection of material evidence of the history of Riga. The PremisesDuring the reconstruction of the Riga Dom Cathedral in the 1890s, part of the former monastery was converted to serve the needs of the Dom Museum. It is the first building in the history of Riga to have been built for a museum, and the inscription on the museum front bears testimony to this. Within the premises there is the Column Hall, built in 1778 in the Classicism style, which housed the library until 1891. The hall is now being used for conferences and a historical 18th—19th centuries exhibition. The Column Hall faces the 13th century groin vaulted gallery and the Riga Dom Cathedral yard, a remarkable Romanesque and Gothic monument of the kind in the Baltic states. The Riga Dom Cathedral ensemble itself is an aesthetic treat that provides information about different periods in the construction of Riga.

  • Museum is good . . . start on the top floor and work your way down towards the end. There was a small admission fee (only museum we had to pay for in Riga) but worth it. Most of the displays had guide...  more »
  • It's a vast array of objects from Latvian history . Not the most exciting museum . I found it helpful to use the manuals on display to read about the history and then look around .  more »
  • Here, I differ from most others, it seems. I thought it was a dreary and old-fashioned museum that is not caught up. Have no desire to go back.

  • I'm not the only one thinking it either. In serious need of an upgrade. Probably good with a guide but there is so much one can learn from laminated papers.
  • Nice museum about Latvia and Riga history. Worth of 1.5 - 2.0 hours to spend here and see interesting exhibits including 500 yo Big Kristaps statue and the legend about beginning of Christmas tree decoration tradition in Riga.
  • My favorite museum in Riga, I loved the building, the contents, and I believe it gives a rich explanation of Riga's history! My only complaint is that the information could be more accessible for English speakers (although it's available it's not too practical)
  • This place seriously need to add English to their monters explaining what everything his. There is some pamphlets, but it is harder to use than the info next to the items. This museum for some of the highest asking price of all museums and they should fix this.
  • Really interesting museum of latvian history. I highly recommend to visit it.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
