Riga Central Market, Riga

Flea Market Shopping
At Riga Central Market, see how old German zeppelin hangars from World War I were reconstructed to serve as venues to sell meat, fish, produce, and dairy products. One of the most notable structures from 20th century in Latvia, this market has been included in World Heritage List. Try some smoked salmon, homemade apple juice, caviar, or freshly picked mushrooms. You can shop for nonfood items, too, such as knee-length woolen socks with "Riga" knitted into them. Each pavilion has slightly different opening hours. A visit to Riga Central Market represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Riga family vacation planner to plot your vacation.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.

  • Fascinating markets with an interesting history. Lots of fresh food products to buy and baked goods.  more »

  • The Central Market is a great place to get most produce at a reasonable price. 4 stars because the layout can be confusing and it takes a few visits to learn where everything is. Definitely part of my shopping routine it's a fun place to look around. Be sure to bring a bigger bag with you as all the vendors give you small bags to hold your purchases which can be difficult to carry if you buy a lot.
  • A great place to visit whether you are a tourist or local. Full of fresh natural goods from local (and EU imported) farmers. Even if you don't want to but anything, with going there for the experience of one of the biggest open air markets in Europe. Keep an eye on your valuables, though. It is busy and pickpockets are in action.
  • The central market is very one of my personal key sights of Riga. The goods sold are very good and not so expensive. Next time, I could spend a whole day there just eating and would not spend as much as in a average restaurant. A little knowledge in russian is useful, but everything was working english-only also.
  • Fantastic produce market inside huge hangars where Zeppelins were previously built. Each hangar has a separate produce. One for meats, another for fish, another for vegetables and another for cheese & dairy.. Well worth a visit for the architecture, fresh produce and general environment.
  • I love the good quality of the food presented here. Also, the prices are unbeatable. Often less than half of what you have to pay in supermarkets.
