Riga Cathedral, Riga

4.2
At Riga Cathedral, see the famous Dome organ--the largest organ in the world at the time of its construction in the late 19th century. Bishop Albert of Riga built the church in the 13th century as archbishop's seat. The rooster on the top of the Baroque clock tower is a guardian of the Christian faith. The largest medieval church in the Baltic states, its appearance has changed many times. Walk around the cloisters to see the original foundations. The church also serves as a concert hall and showcases internationally renowned choirs. • In Winter has a particular appeal, snowwflakes are not annoying, and even the paved roads - so difficult to walk- are nice. The Cathedral is worth a visit!!  more »
  • The cathedral stands in the northwest part of the city of Riga. From the Town Hall square is in less than five minutes to walk. Riga Cathedral is the Cathedral Church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia and is the largest church in the Baltic States. The foundation stone was laid probably in the year 1211. The 90 m high tower in the Baroque style was first built in 1776. Externally, the red brick building is already very impressive. The simple Interior has a little disappointed however. Simple and largely unadorned design there is only quite little to see. Liked the stained-glass Windows and the huge organ have us.

  • This is one of Rigas landmarks. Cathedral belfry completes skyline viewing from other side of Daugava river. Stained glass windows greatly decorate interior. Inside there is small exposition of armory dating eighteen century.
  • A good visit. Lots of nice architecture and it's a big place. You can also read about the history of the church if you're interested. Doesn't cost much to enter so would strongly encourage a visit.
  • Very gorgeous place with unique acoustic. Great place to go to organ concerts.
  • Ticket 3€ only, you can go everywhere and make photos. Monumental, very beatiful, big exposition of different historical things. All translated to 4 languages, very comfort.
  • Russian orthodox really likes gold. Amazing historical location.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
