The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia 1940-1991 is an historic educational institution located in Riga, Latvia. It was established in 1993 to exhibit artifacts, archive documents, and educate the public about the 51-year period in the 20th century when Latvia was successively occupied by the USSR in 1940, then by Nazi Germany in 1941, and then again by the USSR in 1944. Official programs for visits to Latvia of top level representatives of other countries normally include a visit to the Museum of the Occupation.HistoryThe museum was established in 1993 after Paulis Lazda, a History Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, proposed the idea to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia to create a museum covering the occupation period of Latvia, from 1940-1991. This led to the establishment of the Occupation Museum Foundation (OMF), now the Occupation Museum Association (OMB), in spring 1993. The OMF was made of 11 people who aimed to establish, administer and finance the museum. The first exhibition of the museum opened on 1 July 1993. The exhibition covered the period of the first Soviet occupation of Latvia from 1940 to 1941. The museum was expanded in the following years to cover the whole occupation period.MissionThe museum's stated mission is to: "Show what happened in Latvia, its land and people under two occupying totalitarian regimes from 1940 to 1991; "Remind the world of the crimes committed by foreign powers against the state and people of Latvia; "Remember the victims of the occupation: those who perished, were persecuted, forcefully deported or fled the terror of the occupation regimes.

  • There are materials here *but not on display.* Apparently you have to make special arrangements to get access. What you can see is a small room with changing exhibits. In September 2016 the current on...  more »
  • It is not a real museum, just a place for some administration. So, they don't let you examine all the building: it's just possible to see the ground floor and the backyard. But still it's interesting ...  more »
  • The building is old and amazing, but the muzeum inside is bad. It's almost nothing. One room for contemporary exhibition and thats all. You can see the other things on the internet. So don't come here...  more »

  • The museum is located in the center of the old town. We tried the 5D movie theater, which is a tour of Riga main attraction. Very recommended!
  • Temporarily moved to: Raiņa bulvāris 7, Riga, Latvia. Well worth the visit. Gives a detailed history Latvia. Ignore all the 1 star reviews by butt-hurt Russians. They should be more like the Germans and accept their historical atrocities.
  • Amazing museum of Latvian anti soviet propaganda. Only good thing is that it was free. But jumping off a bridge is also free, and that's probably more fun.
  • One of my favorite stops in Riga; very informative, albeit small museum about the interesting and often-forgotten history of occupation.
  • The workers are working hard, but they are bringing up many facts that have been proved wrong by historians from THE WHOLE WORLD and not only by pro-Russian ones, so don't think this is a butthurt Russian's review. Historical museums are supposed to be objective but this one isn't.
