Latvian War Museum, Riga

3.4
#6 of 103 in Museums in Latvia
At Latvian War Museum learn about the political and military history of the country. Told through photographs and awards, the story of Latvia also unfolds through displays of weapons and objects that once belonged to the military. In addition to outlining the country's experience through two world wars, the museum provides exhibits from medieval times to the modern day. View uniforms and helmets used in battle or size up grenades of different powers and dimensions. Dioramas depict historic moments and give insight into the war experience. Tour the museum on your own or request a self-guided tour via your phone or the website. See Latvian War Museum and all Riga has to offer by arranging your trip with our Riga trip planner.

  • A nice place in General. Roomy, exposure selected for years, but after alebard and swords 13 century is at once the first world war. Closes at 18.00, at approximately 17.30 closed halls were 17.40 almost in the dark. Housekeeper walked behind us on the heels of literally, nor for anyone anymore. But silently. No signatures in addition to Latvian, there are almost no where English, so much is unclear. In the Hall with the foreign form there is even a Canadian, but there is no Russian.

  • I highly recommend taking the guided tour, the guide was an incredible story teller, genuine & heartfelt. He knew how to add levity & humor where appropriate as well as sharing personal insight & familial experiences to bring reliability to a heavy topic that still weighs prominently on the national consciousness
  • Great museum to learn the whys and wherefores that make up the unique Baltic outlook on modern world history
  • Great insight into history and incredibly well designed museum. Brilliant exhibits and use of storytelling and technology to guide you through history. Never gets boring!
  • It's small. Only need an hour. The museum is in Latvian and English and includes some videos. It's by donations, so go and give what you think it was worth.
  • Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Latvia and the Baltics in general!

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
