The Latvian National Theatre is the national theatre of Latvia in Riga. The theatre was built between 1899-1902 by the design of Latvian architect Augusts Reinbergs, becoming Riga's second theatre. It closed during the First World War; on 18 November 1918, Latvia's independence was declared in the theatre building. In 1917 the first shows in Latvian were held in the theatre. The Latvian National Theatre was founded 30 November 1919, just over a year after independence. The creative program was authored by Jānis Akurāters, a Latvian writer, then head of the Art department of the Ministry of Education. The current managing director of the theatre is Ojārs Rubenis and the artistic director is Edmunds Freibergs.

Without being so extraordinary, this building is one of the major of the city of Riga. Personally, we could not visit the interest and settle of the external façade which is still beautiful to photograph.

The Latvian National Theatre is located behind the old Riga, on the crossroads of streets Krishjanja Waldemar Kronvalda Boulevard. Atlanta support balconies that adorn the high and wide Windows. I love to walk there in the days of performances: foyer and well-dressed spectators in evening dresses can be seen even from the opposite side of the street. And here's a theatre productions in themselves are interesting to those who know Latvian. Here come the only dramatic performances, so without a good knowledge of the language game of actors it is difficult to understand. For Opera and Ballet I advise go to the Opera and Ballet Theatre (Latvian National Opera), and for performances in Russian-the Russian Theatre named after Mikhail Chekhov.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
