  • Just outside Riga, however well accessible to public transport. Nice insight into the history, few visitors despite a Festival. Have a great, cheap cold soup eaten in the cafeteria, I don't know what it was but could agree only with hands and feet, but on very friendly kind and wise. Nice gift shop.

  • Take bus no 1 from the Esplanade in central Riga (takes around 30 minutes) to the outskirts of the city - watch out for the brown sign pointing to the Open Air Museum. It is very important to visit on...  more »

  • This was simply awesome. I was there almost four years ago. Trees, lake and smell of latvian history was really impressive to me. I'd like to visit there again if possible.. Highly recommended for visitors of Latvia. You wont regret seeing it.
  • Fantastic ethnic museum in the open air. Very authentic, full of local history, just beautiful. Travel back in time to see how people lived all across Latvia. Be prepared to have lots of walking, cause you don't want to miss anything.
  • Big territory, good for just calm and peaceful nature hike, but also provides architectural historical value. It's the regular people/peasant kind of architecture of 17.-19.century, in contrast what one can see in Rundale, for example. Polish, slavic kind of structures from wood with a mixes from northern influence, separated in sectors, all museum spots have descriptions in lv/rus/eng.
  • If you are interested in history, then it's a must. Also we saw a hare here once, it was running between the exemplars of peasant huts toward the forest.
  • About 30 mins out of Riga city centre on bus 1, this museum is a nice day out to stroll in the woods by the lake and enjoy the old dwellings.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
