4.1
#6 of 9 in Parks in Riga
Ķīpsala is an island on the left bank of the Daugava river, connected to Riga city center and Pārdaugava by the Shroud Bridge. Ķīpsala is divided from the rest of Riga by the Daugava in the east, Roņu dīķis in the north, Zunda in the west and Agenskalna līcis in the south. In recent years Ķīpsala has become a prestigious area for living in Riga. There is a campus of the RTU including a newly renovated dorm on Ķīpsala as well as the Olimpia shopping center. The International School of Riga campus has also been situated on Ķīpsala since 2001.The Žanis Lipke Memorial is located on the island at 9 Mazais Balasta dambis. It was built next to the home of Jānis Lipke, where he had arranged a shelter for rescued Jews during the Nazi occupation.

Old wooden architecture, great fun to walk around and look at. Many houses that are not right, they hope to due is demolished. There is also a small beach, but it is not the thing.

The East Bank is very nice to go, the other side has no interest. The more than century-old wooden houses are charming, mostly renovated. A few creative facilities and renovations are just as interesting. We change scale compared to the center of RIga, the framework is more intimate, no traffic, it's more like in a capital city! To walk by the bridge is the icing on the cake because obviously the old town on the one hand... and on the other the national library which has been controversial at the architectural level. Not recommended for strollers and wheelchairs however.

Riga will find more than surprise you! This Kipsala. Kipsala is the Island District of Riga. It is not difficult-we just have to go cable-stayed bridge from the old town, it is 15-20 minutes. The island itself, there are approximately 300 years old and is the tip of a huge sand dune, and therefore its shape changed all the time, depending on the behavior of the river. And only in the 20 century the island acquired its modern shape. Once fishermen settled here. Currently, Kipsala is interesting because there are fine examples of wooden architecture, which are carefully kept by residents. Even attempted some Aussie to break one of the houses and build something else, did not succeed. The House remained in place, and from Australian-kangaroo on the roof. Walks on Kipsala deliver pleasure. Contemplation of the houses, the atmosphere of peace and quiet and great views will not leave you indifferent. A former plaster factory restaurant is located, and the factory turned into loft apartments.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
