#22 of 266 in Things to do in Riga
As you walk around Riga, be sure to observe JJugenda Stila Nami, Riga, the predominant architectural style of over one-third of the buildings in the city's central district. This movement celebrated artistic freedom and dramatic elements. Accompanying the economic boom of Latvia in the late 19th century, the flamboyant style also appeared in great European cities like Paris, Barcelona, and Moscow. Very quickly it came to dominate Riga, shaping hundreds of its buildings--800 of which can be viewed today. Stroll the streets of the capital and admire the Art Nouveau blend of elements, such as gargoyles and dragons, combined with floral lines and profoundly geometric shapes. • The Jugenda Stila NAMI is a piece North of the city at height of the Kronvalda Park. From the freedom monument from one is walking in less than 15 minutes. Center of the district is the relatively short Alberta Iela. It welcomes the visitor with a concentrated charge Art Nouveau. The beautifully renovated houses outdo each other in their beauty. Flourishes, ornaments and decorative accessories, where whatever the gaze falls. The houses in a relatively short period of time between 1901 and 1908 were built. Also in the side streets, one finds again very nice building, but not as concentrated as in the Alberta Iela. We liked it here as well, we were twice here. The walk from the old town here worthwhile in any case.

  • Line is many things, even contradict each other. But mostly it's the city of Art nouveau, or jugendstil. And this often gets overlooked. Don't miss all the art that this district will reserve: authentic pearls, by unique details. For me it was one of the main reasons why Line won me over.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
