House of Blackheads, Riga
(4.4/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Discover why House of Blackheads used to be called the "grandest adornment of Riga." You can see carvings, reliefs, and embedded statues on its facade, then head for the arched entrance flanked by a virgin and child, plus the patron saint himself. The city built this house in the 14th century as a meeting venue for different social organizations. In the 17th century, its sole occupants were the Brotherhood of Blackheads--a guild of unmarried German merchants. Nazi Germans and Soviets destroyed the building during and after World War II, but it was completely restored in 1999. Notice the portal engraving, which states, "Should you ever see me falling, raise me up, 'tis your calling." • Riga is beautiful in every brick. But this place is my favourite. The architect was genius. The shape, the color, the idea of building - everything is delicious!
  • House on Town Hall square is the most beautiful building of Riga. Worth making as far as photo on his background! The ancient structure was destroyed during the great patriotic war and fully restored only in 1999. For domestic visits in November 2016 year was closed.

  • Be sure to visit, unusual architecture. Lovely photos, near the stop of the double-decker buses.

  • You can spend a fair share of time just admiring the intricate details of this building's facade! One of the best places where to start your Riga tour.
  • Beautiful architecture! Nice to take photo in the morning when the sun is up and at night for some golden colours of this building.
  • Well worth the time checking it out. Did not go inside, just enjoyed the views of the outside while waiting to meet up with a local friend.
