Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), Riga

4.2
Look up to the top of Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), a copper statue of Liberty, for the three stars held aloft on this high obelisk. The stars symbolize the three major regions of Latvia. Kārlis Zāle designed the 42 m (138 ft) high memorial as a tribute to soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The sculptures and the bas-reliefs at the foot of the obelisk represent heroes, heroines, and the common people. Notice an ancient warrior standing between two kneeling modern soldiers in the "guards of the fatherland." Catch the changing of the guard every hour. The monument makes a great benchmark for navigation in Riga. • Is a memorial honouring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920). It is considered an important symbol of the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Latvia. Unveiled in 1935, the 42-metre high monument of granite, travertine, and copper often serves as the focal point of public gatherings and official ceremonies in Riga.
  • One of Latvian people cherished treasures. Built in 1935, the 42-metre (138ft). The statue was built by Latvian donations. The statue stands tall as the Latvia people and so does the brave soldiers guarding the Monument. You might even catch a time (1 hour is the time when they change. They also patrol 1. after 30min) but they don't guard the Monument in extreme conditions (under -10°C {14°F} and above 25°C {77°F}
  • A monument built to honour the soldiers who perished during the Latvian war. There is a rotation of the guards at 1pm everyday and guards are posted at this point during daytime. Its at the heart of the city centre and is very difficult to miss.

  • Monument to those who fought against the forces of darkness in two wars. A magnificent symbol of Latvian willingness to fight for freedom and independence. Located in the city centre so there is no reason not to visit and pay respect to the brave warriors of the past
