Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), Riga

4.1
#7 of 266 in Things to do in Riga
Look up to the top of Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), a copper statue of Liberty, for the three stars held aloft on this high obelisk. The stars symbolize the three major regions of Latvia. Kārlis Zāle designed the 42 m (138 ft) high memorial as a tribute to soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The sculptures and the bas-reliefs at the foot of the obelisk represent heroes, heroines, and the common people. Notice an ancient warrior standing between two kneeling modern soldiers in the "guards of the fatherland." Catch the changing of the guard every hour. The monument makes a great benchmark for navigation in Riga. • The freedom monument is a piece outside the historic old town of Riga in close proximity to the Pilsetas of channel. From the Town Hall square is to walk in less than three minutes here. The freedom monument was at times of the first Latvian independence in the years 1931 to 1935 designed by the sculptor Kārlis Zāle. At the foot of the total 42 metre-high monument, important events of in Latvian history are symbolically represented by various sculptures as the guardians of the fatherland, the mother Latvia as well as work and family.  Well, the monument certainly is powerful and impressive. As beautiful we would not refer to but it. But it is worth to visit here. Especially the base with the numerous groups of sculpture are worth seeing.

  • Fun to have seen when it means a lot to people from Latvia, but one does not need to calculate a lot of time for a visit here.

  • This monument is very symbolic of the city and the history of the country, because it represents the three parts of the Latvia. However the spectacular monument by its height remains symbolic art inherited from the Soviet period.

  • There are a lot of activities and shows going on at Independence Day (18th November). Beautiful place and monument!
  • If you want to know the true beauty behind this piece of art, make sure to read up about it before visiting or even take a local guide with you. Each part of the monument has a meaning.
  • Place : MUST see in Riga. Especially on 18th November, it was really, really beautiful! ❤
  • It's great but all the disrespectful tourists ruin it. And why do some many Brits think it's cool to pee on monuments? Douche bags.
  • Wonderful, green and spacious pedestrian area. Right near the Old Town

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
