Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), Riga
(4.1/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Look up to the top of Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), a copper statue of Liberty, for the three stars held aloft on this high obelisk. The stars symbolize the three major regions of Latvia. Kārlis Zāle designed the 42 m (138 ft) high memorial as a tribute to soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The sculptures and the bas-reliefs at the foot of the obelisk represent heroes, heroines, and the common people. Notice an ancient warrior standing between two kneeling modern soldiers in the "guards of the fatherland." Catch the changing of the guard every hour. The monument makes a great benchmark for navigation in Riga. • Said this place and this attraction pleases me beforehand. After seeing movies and photos of the history of Riga I realized that this place has been very much to the history of the city and gave it more importance. so much so that walking near sobering and is almost interesting! Nice all the outline in which is placed the statue!!

  • The monument is impressive with its green figure aloft - it is unmissable & very important to Latvian people. The guards add to the atmosphere with their goose-step marching & their uniforms.
  • For Latvians independence from Russia is proud to celebrate ... this monument from which it is possible to visit the old city is recent compared to what we're used to us Italians, every hour until 18 changing of the guard!

  • The Heart of Latvia. The most significant monument of this country! It has survived the Soviet occupation and this is from where the freedom movement started. It has enormous emotional, historical and cultural significance for Latvia.
  • Guards are keeping this place as if you were in Buckingham. You can even assist a guard rolling ...but not any info the exact time. Statue will surprise you .
  • Awesome place. Must see. The memorial is in danger, lots of mold within the cracks. I Love the soldiers walk and presence, but they wear an M16; that weapon was not used in WW, even not invented when the memorial was built.
  • If you're in sightseeing, you should visit the occupation museum! Very nice monument.
  • You cannot visit Riga and miss this. The symbol of our freedom and history - and the lady on the backs of Latvian euro coins.
