Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), Riga

4.1
#6 of 181 in Things to do in Riga
Look up to the top of Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), a copper statue of Liberty, for the three stars held aloft on this high obelisk. The stars symbolize the three major regions of Latvia. Kārlis Zāle designed the 42 m (138 ft) high memorial as a tribute to soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The sculptures and the bas-reliefs at the foot of the obelisk represent heroes, heroines, and the common people. Notice an ancient warrior standing between two kneeling modern soldiers in the "guards of the fatherland." Catch the changing of the guard every hour. The monument makes a great benchmark for navigation in Riga. Not much to see at the moment. Check before you go if it's important to you. Quite a lot of tarpaulins and scaffolding in Riga at the moment.  more »

One of main landmarks of Riga. Depicts Latvian people who fought for independence from foreign powers. At the top of monument is Liberty who holds 3 stars that are three provinces of Latvia at that time. The other groups of sculptures show combination of Latvian history and mythology.

A gem in the city. The surrounding area and park are beautiful. The accordian player, dancers and street performers made my visit very special. Don't miss this area!

We were here during the Restoration of Independence day, so there was an honor guard in front of it. It is located in the middle of a park and offers a nice spot for taking a seat and enjoying the view.

It is a tall, easily identifiable landmark with Milda, a lady, on top holding some Soviet stars. It in no way resembles a public toilet, so it is odd why so many drunk tourists seem to try to use it as such.

Pure art! Greek style sculptures and the place to celebrate independence day that I unfortunately missed.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
