Categories: Monuments, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.1/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web
Look up to the top of Freedom Monument (Brivibas Piemineklis), a copper statue of Liberty, for the three stars held aloft on this high obelisk. The stars symbolize the three major regions of Latvia. Kārlis Zāle designed the 42 m (138 ft) high memorial as a tribute to soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The sculptures and the bas-reliefs at the foot of the obelisk represent heroes, heroines, and the common people. Notice an ancient warrior standing between two kneeling modern soldiers in the "guards of the fatherland." Catch the changing of the guard every hour. The monument makes a great benchmark for navigation in Riga.
