Central Market (Centraltirgus), Riga

4.1
#1 of 23 in Shopping in Latvia
At Central Market (Centraltirgus), see how old German zeppelin hangars from World War I were reconstructed to serve as venues to sell meat, fish, produce, and dairy products. One of the most notable structures from 20th century in Latvia, this market has been included in World Heritage List. Try some smoked salmon, homemade apple juice, caviar, or freshly picked mushrooms. You can shop for nonfood items, too, such as knee-length woolen socks with "Riga" knitted into them. Each pavilion has slightly different opening hours. To visit Central Market (Centraltirgus) on your trip to Riga, use our Riga journey builder website .

  • Lots of great halls with everything from cheese, meat, fruit and vegetables, very nice set up and in between it all, there are lots of opportunities to try to eat locally and to a very cheap money, Outside between the halls, there are lots of stalls with everything possible.

  • Worth a visit! Especially the fish - not seafood - section. For caviar lovers!!!! Good beer in the few eating places. Outside market not so good, full of turkish and chinese crap. Try the latvian vers...  more »
  • Found this market very depressing . Set in old Soviet building . The food was average and the shopping full of cheap imported crap and scary looking people . I’ve been to better markets .  more »

  • Good place to get all sorts of things, from random pieces of junk to meat, veggies and alcohol. You can find pretty much everything here and the selection is better at other shops as well as the price is usually cheaper (souvenirs are definitely cheaper). And you can always negotiate on the price. P.S. This is the place to buy your Latvian souvenirs.
  • This is an amazing market! Riga central market is for sure the place where you will find the real market atmosphere. Is huge, divided for meat, fish, greens, bakery and more. It is a covered market, but there is also a big part outdoor. Is impressive how many foods you can buy there! Also inside there are different places where is possible to eat with service! I give only 4 stars because not everybody speaks english, so sometimes is not easy to be undersood.
  • Unique place to look around and large choice of different food and products. Personally liked the two Brewery bars with a good choice. Also purchased some snacks from the Gastronomy hall. You could see the history of the market and buildings.
  • Wonderful market both inside and outside stalls and shops. The produce of sale was high quality and low price. We wandered around for about and hour and had not seen everything but were exhausted. There are also stalls selling hand-knitted goods, jewellery etc, all at very reasonable prices. A must-see location when you visit Riga.
  • Aparenttly one of the biggest markets in Europe. Wide selection of merchandise. Wonderful to wander through. Good bargains to be found.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
