Central Market (Centraltirgus), Riga

4.1
#1 of 40 in Shopping in Latvia
At Central Market (Centraltirgus), see how old German zeppelin hangars from World War I were reconstructed to serve as venues to sell meat, fish, produce, and dairy products. One of the most notable structures from 20th century in Latvia, this market has been included in World Heritage List. Try some smoked salmon, homemade apple juice, caviar, or freshly picked mushrooms. You can shop for nonfood items, too, such as knee-length woolen socks with "Riga" knitted into them. Each pavilion has slightly different opening hours. To visit Central Market (Centraltirgus) on your trip to Riga, use our Riga journey builder website .

  • The market and get off at the bus station in Riga, on the other side of the River with kamaboko shaped characteristic roof looks. Building was originally Germany Zeppelin hangar is so big and wide, in lined with shops. Categories like broken buildings and areas, sightseeing with local people and visitors and a lot of people had a shop. There were also people who are drinking happily from every weekday morning and standing space in the vodka sold by weight.

  • Visited the fish market as a recommendation. A fascinating place if you haven't been to a similar one before. I would recommend going with a local or at least a Russian speaker. Fresh and smoked fish selection is also great!
  • A must-see in the heart of Riga! Located just backside of the central bus and railway station, at a walking distance from all main hotels and historical Old Town. Riga Central Market offers you an unique mix of products (all from home made pickles to new pair of boots !! - and everything in between). It's also a great contrast to posh shopping centres with luxury boutiques and marble floors ! This place is real, authentic and except the unique travel experience, it's harmless to your budget! Since the prices are 50-70% less than in the stores. Good advice is not to dress up, speak Russian (if you can) & keep an eye on the potential pickpockers.
  • The best place to shop for groceries in Riga: highest variety and best prices from big resellers to local farmers and artisans. If you’re a tourist visiting Riga put this place on your must to see list. A few words of caution: beware of pickpockets and stay alert when buying something, you may be: given light weight, overcharged or simply sold something different from you wanted to buy. Although you may take it as a part of experience as well – happens on every bazaar.
  • The market is huge. The other reviews tell already about the market in general, but I want to share my enthousiasm about our most favorite place. In the same area with the fruits and vegetables is a corner where you can buy pastry. There is a tiny bar in the corner which sells the most delicious hand-craft beers. The best is that you cannot only buy it for take-away, but also drink it on the spot. I have tried 5 different beers during our stay in Riga (needed to come back to that place all over again) and they were all very different to each other, but equally delicious. The bar tender really knows about beers and happily shares his knowledge with the customers. If you go to Riga and you like good beer, you must visit there!
  • Unfortunately this place is aimed mainly for the tourists, because prices sometimes are too high, but the quality is not the best. It has a very big variety of almost everything you need, indeed, but it's the main real advantage. P.S. If you like to buy something cheaper, than wait till the evening when sellers are making discounts for everything they didn't sell during the day.
