Bastion Hill (Bastejkalns), Riga

4.4
#42 of 267 in Things to do in Riga
Located in the center of the bustling city, Bastion Hill (Bastejkalns) offers greenery as far as the eye can see, set apart by a river with tiny waterfalls and bridges. Take a walk along its flower-lined pathways, rest on one of the benches, or observe swans and ducks in their rituals of courtship and preening. You'll find sculptures and memorial monuments dedicated to fallen fighters in 1991. The bridges at this 150-year-old city garden are filled with padlocks placed there in the name of love--feel free to add your own. • If you think this is a mound of 7 meters of sand ... nice place anyway ... relaxing and of course very clean ... we have had in a nice sunny Saturday afternoon and on his turf they lay above all Latvians ... of course given the atmosphere, I have not failed to lie down too ... from here we take the boat to tour the Canal and off we go for a nice walk in the Park ... idyllic atmosphere .... what now nowhere to be found in our cities

  • During my stay in Riga you'll look in this very well maintained corner. Location: near the freedom monument (Milda). Flowers, trees, sculptures and water-all very beautiful and harmonious. Please both adults and children.

  • Someone wrote that park is nicer than the hill and that is correct. Hill is very small and you need 5-10 mins to walk around/on it. Park below it is really nice and quiet. Great to get some rest from ...  more »

  • Lushly green park for a nice walk and break from the busy old town streets.
  • Nice clean park. The landscaping is great.
  • It's a small but lovely park, especially in summers. Plenty of benches and places to sit and relax on.
  • Good place to chill out at all times of the year. To Pokemon GO players: lots of pokestops, currently a geodude nest
  • Nice sightseeing place in centre of Riga. Cool view of freedom monument.

Where to stay in Riga

As tourism surges in Riga, accommodation options and variety have grown too. The Baltic capital has quality lodging for every budget, from centrally located and affordable hostels, to private apartments and hotel rooms, to chic main-street hotels. The Old Town, a World Heritage Site, sits at the center of it all, so consider staying here if you want to be in the thick of things. For lower prices, look slightly outside of the city's core but within walking distance. For somewhere a little quieter, check out neighborhoods like Agenskalns and Tornakalns, which are less touristy, well-preserved districts.
