Karosta Prison, Liepaja

Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.3/5 based on 85 reviews on the web
Take your day to the extreme at Karosta Prison, where you can experience behind bars via guided tour or, if you're up for it, first-hand. Once a death-row confinement prison that no one escaped from, today the site replicates the atmosphere from tsarist times. Damp rooms where the inmates spent their days offer insight into their lives, and you can walk around the offices and the canteen. The museum has received international fame for its quirky tourist offer: spend the night in a cell and be treated like a prisoner. Choose your type of torture and get to be verbally abused, punished, and haunted by the spirits of ex-convicts during the wee hours. • My friend and I travelled around Latvia by car for a week and this was definitely the highlight of the trip. We stayed overnight at the prison which is a lot of fun. Juris stayed with us took us on a ...  read more »
  • You can find the district just outside Liepaja Karosta. Gzbouwd used for soldiers and now a strange part of the city with empty weathered mansions and drab Soviet blocks. There is still an army base but you can also visit the old prison. It was the site where onfehoorzame soldiers and deserters had to doobrengen some days at the time of the Russians, the Nazis, the Soviet Union and still a few years in the independent Latvia. I got a private tour but that was quite short. The cells and bathroom are quite gripping. The rooms with memorabilia be that much less. In the end, I got another interesting movie about the history of Karosta. Alien visit but interesting. For the willing there is an offer of overnight stays and special tours and a game.

  • Is far away, in a former military camp. Alone can be reached by bus 3, 0.8 euros. to the end. There you can ask the local or use the Navigator. Guided tours every hour, is you go for example in 10:10, then you will have to wait until 11. Worth 4.5 euros. Duration 45 minutes. If you really have nothing to do, you can go and see 4 hours of time spend. You can spend the night in a cell.

  • This is a really unusual experience and we highly recommend it. The brave can stay overnight and be treated as prisoners but we contented ourselves with a video and tour. The tour guide speaks three languages and does an excellent if rather rapid talk in English. He was very knowledgeable indeed and it is well worth listening to his account of life in Latvia under various hostile regimes. Go and learn! There is a little cafe that does snacks and the site has things to catch the imagination of children.
  • Once-in-a-lifetime must experience, if you're around. Can get a bit rough but it's supposed to be like that
  • Best museum experience in the Baltics
  • I recommend you to visit The Karosta prison. I've been there, it was kind of scary but awesome!
  • It is one of the most amazing places in Latvia! Don't miss it!
