Karosta Prison, Liepaja

(90 reviews on the web)
Historic Site
Take your day to the extreme at Karosta Prison, where you can experience behind bars via guided tour or, if you're up for it, first-hand. Once a death-row confinement prison that no one escaped from, today the site replicates the atmosphere from tsarist times. Damp rooms where the inmates spent their days offer insight into their lives, and you can walk around the offices and the canteen. The museum has received international fame for its quirky tourist offer: spend the night in a cell and be treated like a prisoner. Choose your type of torture and get to be verbally abused, punished, and haunted by the spirits of ex-convicts during the wee hours. • It was a bit tricky to find the place on foot and it's quite far away from the coach station (about an hour-long walk) and there are not too many signs to guide you. Do check the maps if you want to w...  more »
  • I've been to prison twice on the way to the Museum in Kaliningrad. The prison museum guides are really skilled, and if you have the time, you might want to ask them more about the history of the region. They may, for example, and this is borne out in the Finnish War of interesting information about the Jaeger movement (or at least some of the guides could it tell you). The place is a small coffee shop, where to get the next sweet treats and coffee, but also beer. The prison is just a short distance from a large sea wall, so there you should definitely go on the same trip! I have visited in the summer of 2014 and 2012.

  • As all excursions are with the guide, it is good to visit Karosta Prison out of season, even in wintertime. It is not crowded. If you are lucky, you can get the tour for yourself only. Our guide obvio...  more »

  • I found that the main tour with artifacts from the era is a bit boring. But the stories behind the cells of this prison is captivating and scary. Ask the guide about sanitary conditions and the amount of the cell occupants. You can actually spend a night in this prison.
  • This is a really unusual experience and we highly recommend it. The brave can stay overnight and be treated as prisoners but we contented ourselves with a video and tour. The tour guide speaks three languages and does an excellent if rather rapid talk in English. He was very knowledgeable indeed and it is well worth listening to his account of life in Latvia under various hostile regimes. Go and learn! There is a little cafe that does snacks and the site has things to catch the imagination of children.
  • Once-in-a-lifetime must experience, if you're around. Can get a bit rough but it's supposed to be like that
  • I recommend you to visit The Karosta prison. I've been there, it was kind of scary but awesome!
  • Interesting and scaring place!
