Rundale Palace Museum (Rundales Pils), Bauska

Explore the history of Latvia's court through collections at Rundale Palace Museum (Rundales Pils). The palace was built in the 1730s as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland. A Berlin sculptor and several Italian painters created most of the interior decorations, including lavish stucco creations. You can visit the Duke's suite with reception parlors and private rooms, and see a fully restored suite of duchess' rooms. Walk through a maze of alleys in a French garden with rose bouquets, pergolas, a green theater, and a fountain. The garden reflects the history of cultivating roses in Europe from the early 18th century onward. Rundāle Palace is a true jewel of the history and architecture of the 18th century, is situated among fields of the former Duchy of Courland, about 80 km from Riga. Is most suited to him the word "gourmet". The Palace was built to a design by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli for the Duke of Courland-a favourite of Empress Anna ioannovna Ernest Johann Biron. Built for quite a long time, with a break, because Byron was sent into exile, where and spent all the reign of Elizabeth Petrovna, and then came back. This suburban estate of nobles, where they lived, took, went on the hunt. This is the House in which no pomposity Royal residences, but there is a spirit of light, ironic, profane and striving for harmony of the 18th century. The owners have changed over time, so that the history of this place is very rich. Each Hall is interesting, but the most memorable: Golden Hall, White Hall, Bathroom Cabinets, porcelain roses Boudoir Duchess. Generally, in the Palace-beauty is in the details. Garlands of flowers on the walls or the graceful birds-graceful stucco decoration, porcelain, blue-and-white tiles, vintage costumes. The Palace was restored for a long time, and a huge work has been done! To restore a similar ensemble is very difficult, given that in the 20th century it housed a school, and warehouses. On the first floor you can see the exhibition about the restoration. Behind the Palace is a beautiful park. You can go on an excursion to rundale Palace from Riga with the group. However, if you get yourself from Riga, you must take a bus from the bus station to the town of Bauska, bus runs frequently, go h, and then another ten kilometers, moving to another bus to the rundale Palace. Unfortunately, this second bus is quite rare, for example at 11 am, and then a big break. So his schedule is worth a look on the Internet in advance. More information can be found on the Museum's website, there's also this site has a link to timetables.

Nice palace with lots of things to see. Staff isn't prepared for situations like lost child though. I found 3 years old walking outside by herself with no adults in sight, and ticket officer after 5 minutes of thinking offered me to stay with her or walk her to the restaurant inside and leave for the staff her while they will think of how to look for parents. Turned out officer had been seeing this child for 20 minutes, but didn't do anything.

Interesting palace, a lot of history. I liked the basement a lot, going through the restoration process and the history of the palace. Could have more restaurants etc.

Worth visiting if you are passing by, but not worth driving here from long distance.

If you want to feel like a king, you probably have to visit this palace. Unique thing.

Beautiful historic place, no one room is the same. The staff are not that friendly though.
