Wat Si Saket, Vientiane

3.9
#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Vientiane
Thanks to its sturdy Siamese style architecture, Wat Si Saket stands intact and represents one of the oldest temples in the capitol. The Buddhist compound served as headquarters to the armies of Siam during king Anouvong's rebellion in 1827--which resulted in the city's total destruction and the relocation of its denizens. As you explore the temple halls and courtyard, examine the cloister walls both inside and out, which feature over more than 2,000 images of Buddha made of ceramic and silver. The main hall itself keeps a total of 6,480 Buddha images on its walls. Expect crowds at this popular attraction. Very nice place to learn something of the culture of the country. I visited the site in the summer and there were only a few visitors on the ground next to me.

This "hair on the head," located in a garden in the city centre, is of relatively recent construction (19th century) and refurbished. It is notable for the quantity of the Buddha statues arranged in his cloister and that date back to the XV and XVIII th. Overall worth the visit.

Where to stay in Vientiane

Pretty little Vientiane offers a good range of accommodations, with most either mid-range or upmarket hotels by national standards. Close to the riverfront sit the grandest of the bunch, with newly built high-rise hotels and boutiques set in old French colonial buildings. Move away from the water a little to find some standard, unassuming hotels, mixed in with a few more boutiques and high-rises overlooking the prettier plazas and along the main boulevards. For budget options, look at the guesthouses and hostels on the side streets around Rue Setthathilath, but make sure to reserve your room early to avoid disappointment.
