Vientiane Night Market, Vientiane

2.5
#2 of 16 in Shopping in Vientiane
Test your bargaining skills at Vientiane Night Market, which emerges every evening on the riverbank. As the sun sets, vendors start putting up their signature red tents on the promenade. Most of the goods--clothes, footwear, accessories for cellphones, and handbags--seem to cater to locals, but you can also find statues and paintings of Buddha, bottles of spirits preserving snakes and scorpions, and hand-crafted items clearly meant for tourists. The only thing you can’t buy from the stalls is food, but if you're feeling peckish, you can always check out the restaurants across the street. • This is local catered night market, not much stalls selling souvenirs or touristy items. Some items are pricier compared to other places, need to bargain reasonably. Across the market is a small area with food stalls. You can try some noodle soup and seat in a secluded open area which is quite nice while do some scene/people watching. It’s not too crowded on weekdays night, so please give it a try.
  • Good prices, don't forget to bargain. A variety of things for sale. A lot similar options, but some different. Extensive, so I managed only half in 2 hrs!
  • A place where you can buy some branded items Ladies wear Men's wear Kiddies wear With affordable price with food stall were you can eat the do called Lao Native foods
  • Only worth going to if 1. You are a local or 2? You are looking to buy cheap clothes. We did see an interesting Chinese outdoor theatre production, though not sure this was specifically part of the night market
  • I have no idea the bad reviews this night market has been receiving, so I decided to write one. Go there if you are in Ventiane! We went there I think every night we were in V. You enjoy a beautiful sunset, grab something to drink/eat. Watch or participate in locals doing daily zumba with instructor and speaker at 18ish. Market has many different souvenirs, clothes and varieties. Also make sure you try out and eat with the locals in the food stands on the other side of the market, where there are lots of food stands and seats.

Where to stay in Vientiane

Pretty little Vientiane offers a good range of accommodations, with most either mid-range or upmarket hotels by national standards. Close to the riverfront sit the grandest of the bunch, with newly built high-rise hotels and boutiques set in old French colonial buildings. Move away from the water a little to find some standard, unassuming hotels, mixed in with a few more boutiques and high-rises overlooking the prettier plazas and along the main boulevards. For budget options, look at the guesthouses and hostels on the side streets around Rue Setthathilath, but make sure to reserve your room early to avoid disappointment.
