Vientiane Night Market, Vientiane

(1.4/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Test your bargaining skills at Vientiane Night Market, which emerges every evening on the riverbank. As the sun sets, vendors start putting up their signature red tents on the promenade. Most of the goods--clothes, footwear, accessories for cellphones, and handbags--seem to cater to locals, but you can also find statues and paintings of Buddha, bottles of spirits preserving snakes and scorpions, and hand-crafted items clearly meant for tourists. The only thing you can’t buy from the stalls is food, but if you're feeling peckish, you can always check out the restaurants across the street. Our Vientiane trip itinerary planner makes visiting Vientiane Night Market and other Vientiane attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Worth coming at about sunset, to enjoy people watching in the park along Mekong, then hunting for rare local crafts hidden in a sea of cheap plastic Chinese imports.
  • It's mostly cheap clothing for the locals. If you have ever wanted a pair of "Levis" for $6 this is your chance! However there is no place to try anything on and it looked to me like the sizes were no...  more »
  • Nice stroll before or after dinner instead, this night market along the Mekong squats the car park, making it a little less easy than in day parking. There is passage, which is not common to Vientiane: vast majority of locals, tourists. What can we do, apart from walk around strolling? -nibble a sandwich baguette or a lukchin, sipping a fruit juice or soda - ride on the pier and watch the lights in front. -buy a fake watch or some teeshirts - there are stalls of crafts, ornaments, sculptures and paintings (rather expensive: these stands are for the foreign customer and you will find the same thing cheaper has Chatuchak back on Bangkok, without having to increase your bag). -a few craftsmen - artists in grass stands that make you a small memory not too expensive. Overall, this market is good and friendly. Because there is nothing else to do at night except drink beer on the terrace. I advise to go there without idea in mind and without searching for anything specific, just to avoid being disappointed. The +: + street food appetizing, as always + sociologically interesting-:-pit of clothes all look alike (I exaggerate a little) - Laotians tastes in fashion may not be those of Thais, still less foreigners
