Ho Pra Keo, Vientiane

4.0
#3 of 13 in Historic Sites in Vientiane
Admire centuries of ancient Buddhist statues at Ho Pra Keo, 16th-century temple that served as a private chapel for the Lao royal family. Originally built to house an Emerald Buddha figurine, the temple has undergone reconstruction several times--and the figurine is no longer there. Today, it functions as a museum, displaying many stone Buddha figures from the 6th to 9th century, as well as bronze Buddhas from later periods. Inspect the ornate carved wooden door from the original temple, as well as the gilded throne for the Emerald Buddha. Afterwards, relax in the temple garden in a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Calm reigns in this temple where photographers can have a field day with the different perspectives of the magnificent Buddhas placed in a row. Overall worth the visit as a recent restoration in accentuates the interest.

Nicely restored, beautiful Temple with intricate artifacts inside. You not allowed to photograph inside but the trip and entrance fee is worth it anyway.

This is a great example of a restored temple. Really photogenic on the outside and a display of Buddhas inside. The problem is the lack of labels that make it difficult to know and appreciate what you are looking at. Entry is 5,000 kip for foreigners. Photography is not allowed inside.

This was a fun little find for us. Be sure to find the carved tree stumps that are under a tent near the back of the complex. Complex is currently under some restoration however.

Where to stay in Vientiane

Pretty little Vientiane offers a good range of accommodations, with most either mid-range or upmarket hotels by national standards. Close to the riverfront sit the grandest of the bunch, with newly built high-rise hotels and boutiques set in old French colonial buildings. Move away from the water a little to find some standard, unassuming hotels, mixed in with a few more boutiques and high-rises overlooking the prettier plazas and along the main boulevards. For budget options, look at the guesthouses and hostels on the side streets around Rue Setthathilath, but make sure to reserve your room early to avoid disappointment.
