  • Always when I am in Vientiane, and I find a little time for me, I visit the bronze statue of the former King, Chao Anouvong, which dressed in his military uniform and his Royal hat in a visible size of 6 meters in the direction of Thailand, the ancient Kingdom of Siam, looks. Impressive as he left hand his sword holds and how he holds his right hand into the air and stretches it out, how he wants to say something, and his hand as a greeting to the Thai people. The statue is located in a privileged area in the heart of Vientiane. In the Chao Anouvong Park, nestled between the North Bank of the Mekong River, the Nachtmarket and the Presidential Palace. In 2010, this was built a statue and Park by the Government of Laos, to the celebration of the 450th anniversary of the city of Vientiane, in honor of the King Chao Anouvong. My conclusion: Love again I visit after a walk on the promenade along the Mekong River and the Chao Anouvong Park, where many indigenous people are especially on the weekends, this impressive me again Statue. Dear greetings from Daniel from Switzerland.

  • Statue of king Chao Anouvong stands overlooking the Mekong river on the edge of Chao Anouvong Park , it looks well at night lit up for taking pictures , but during the day the surrounding area is cove...  more »
  • As the title says it’s a statue. Location wise it’s along the Mekong River and better at night for photos. At the rear of the statue is a large fountain with colourful dragons in it. It wasn’t switche...  more »

  • The north side of park is nicer than south side. Still plastic trash to be found around the park. Lots of flies. Fitness equipment here but most is rundown or broken. 2000kip to use toilet. Shop in front of toilet only has bags of chips and sugary drinks. Night market on north side. Statue has no English only Lao explanation.
  • The statue overlooking to Thailand. Its a park where the locals like to pic nic and relax . There have some shops nearby for drinks and ice creams. Have a few small food shops serves small snacks. Walking distance to the famous night market.
  • Nice Evening market ; often very crowded Good park for relaxing and sport activities (like working out on outside machines)
  • Nice place to exercise and spend time with family and friends. And later enjoy the night market
  • In 2010, to coincide with the 450th Anniversary celebrations of Vientiane, the Laos government created Chao Anouvong Park, complete with a large bronze statue of the locally revered ruler. The most significant legacy of Chao Anouvong's Lao Rebellion was the impact of the forced population transfers throughout the region. As a consequence of the warfare and population transfers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, there are now over 19 million ethnic Lao living in the Isan region of Thailand, while less than 6 million live in the independent country of Laos.

Where to stay in Vientiane

Pretty little Vientiane offers a good range of accommodations, with most either mid-range or upmarket hotels by national standards. Close to the riverfront sit the grandest of the bunch, with newly built high-rise hotels and boutiques set in old French colonial buildings. Move away from the water a little to find some standard, unassuming hotels, mixed in with a few more boutiques and high-rises overlooking the prettier plazas and along the main boulevards. For budget options, look at the guesthouses and hostels on the side streets around Rue Setthathilath, but make sure to reserve your room early to avoid disappointment.
