Plain of Jars, Phonsavan

4.3
#1 of 9 in Things to do in Phonsavan
See the mysterious megaliths of Plain of Jars, scattered with thousands of massive stone containers. Of unknown ancient origin, the jars range from 1 to 3 meters in height (3 to 10 feet). Over 90 clusters of these puzzling objects exist across this part of the country. Since the area was carpet-bombed by the American forces, only a few of the archaeological sites have been cleared from unexploded bombs and can be safely visited. Avfantastic experience. We visited 3 different jar sites and each one gave a different view on the people who made these objects. You have to believe what you are told, but you are left still wonderin...  more »

No one knows about the use(s) of these very big jars-water storage, burial, food storage etc. It is a place to slowly walk around, observe the jars and ponder the horizon. All three jar sites are stra...  more »

We stayed 2 days at Xieng Khouang/Phonsavan to visit sites 1, 2 and 3. It is still unusual to see, in addition to a vast panorama, hundreds of stoneware jars scattered in nature. This last is also very beautiful, and it is nice to walk one "deposit" to another as in the site n ° 1, the largest which has 340 jars including one of 6 tons. Assumptions are many as to the function of these objects, the most likely being that of a funerary use. In addition to the French of a certain age, "Plain of the jars" name is a reminder of 'their' war in Indochina. But on-site bombs holes refer especially to hostilities according. A very interesting exhibition also gives a lot of information on this last topic and its current consequences. Another reminder: Laos was the most bombed country in the history per capita.

The main attraction of Phonsavanh, and its surrounds, are the soon to world heritage listed Plain Of Jars sites. There are other attractions to visit, in the outlying areas of the province, but the jars are the main draw card. Site one, with roughly 300 jars, is the largest and, conveniently, the nearest at just ten kilometers from the township. Sites two and three are roughly between 25 – 30 kilometers from town and, although having fewer jars, are on more forested landscapes. There is less shade available at site one and, for this reason, it’s a better option to visit in the late afternoon when the heat has gone from the day. There’s also the added bonus of catching an outstanding sunset from the highest point of the site.

Great mysterious place. Take a private tour to hear some great stories!

Really impressive. The jars are huge and quite mysterious. Also there are many craters from bombs that pocket the landscape...it's like an art museum/war memorial, very intense but beautiful.

Plain of jars itself is an interesting sight but not really as impressive as expected and lacked information. But Phonsavan itself is a rip off and quite expensive to get to and from. Accomdation is also very expensive for incredibly basic rooms.

Must see if you are in luang prabang, 30mind lao skyway fly here instead of take the long bus. Mysterious stone jars.
