Plain of Jars, Phonsavan

4.3
#1 of 8 in Things to do in Phonsavan
See the mysterious megaliths of Plain of Jars, scattered with thousands of massive stone containers. Of unknown ancient origin, the jars range from 1 to 3 meters in height (3 to 10 feet). Over 90 clusters of these puzzling objects exist across this part of the country. Since the area was carpet-bombed by the American forces, only a few of the archaeological sites have been cleared from unexploded bombs and can be safely visited. • Of course you must be interested in something - otherwise it is maybe disappointed, maybe you need also a guide, like the one from the "Tey"service, which may explain one of the backgrounds in perfect English. Were likely in the jars, which were fitted with a lid, kept bones reserved higher the caracters. The others probably served the retention of "way ration". Normal Earth graves have been found next to the pitchers. Up to 6000 kg heavy stone jars were brought from a quarry some km distance. There are hundreds of unfinished. Nearly half is under the Earth, from the top is only up to 2/3 hollowed out been. The whole thing is very reminiscent of the MOAI and Easter Island. The ammunition found on the day and bombs are blown afternoon at 16:00.

  • How nice to rent a scooter and roam in these beautiful places. And even the jars that mysterious! After long wandering stayed in the quarry or mines where they hid the Viet cong to escape the bombing. They say 2000 steps maybe detract from super harmonious landscape I would say. Everything nice.

  • Hidden history .. good to know, thnx to our tour guide 👍
  • Better to before noon as the site is not selter, it's a great place to find more information of the unknown. It's has a garden of flowers at the entrances of the sites
  • The main attraction of Phonsavanh, and its surrounds, are the soon to world heritage listed Plain Of Jars sites. There are other attractions to visit, in the outlying areas of the province, but the jars are the main draw card. Site one, with roughly 300 jars, is the largest and, conveniently, the nearest at just ten kilometers from the township. Sites two and three are roughly between 25 – 30 kilometers from town and, although having fewer jars, are on more forested landscapes. There is less shade available at site one and, for this reason, it’s a better option to visit in the late afternoon when the heat has gone from the day. There’s also the added bonus of catching an outstanding sunset from the highest point of the site.
  • Really impressive. The jars are huge and quite mysterious. Also there are many craters from bombs that pocket the landscape...it's like an art museum/war memorial, very intense but beautiful.
  • Great mysterious place. Take a private tour to hear some great stories!
