See the mysterious megaliths of Plain of Jars, scattered with thousands of massive stone containers. Of unknown ancient origin, the jars range from 1 to 3 meters in height (3 to 10 feet). Over 90 clusters of these puzzling objects exist across this part of the country. Since the area was carpet-bombed by the American forces, only a few of the archaeological sites have been cleared from unexploded bombs and can be safely visited. This is an area surrounded by mountains with a rain forest climate than will make it rain most of the day during the rainy season. We arrived on the only afternoon flight from Vientiane at 3:30 PM. It... more »

We have two (for 300'000 kip per person including lunch and entrance fees) a tour to site 1, 2 and 3, the Russian tanks and a house in the rice wine is produced, booked the owner of Sousath travel Mr. Nouds. The tour with him as a driver and guide was pleasant very much us and we can highly recommend them. In the off-season, it has in fact hardly any tourists here and there are no group tours (except to gather the people themselves is, for which we didn't have time).
I visited Phonsavan in April 2017. The day trips to do the Plain of Jars are quite expensive unless you get a group of people together which significantly reduces the price. You will see lots of trave... more »
The main attraction of Phonsavanh, and its surrounds, are the soon to world heritage listed Plain Of Jars sites. There are other attractions to visit, in the outlying areas of the province, but the jars are the main draw card. Site one, with roughly 300 jars, is the largest and, conveniently, the nearest at just ten kilometers from the township. Sites two and three are roughly between 25 – 30 kilometers from town and, although having fewer jars, are on more forested landscapes. There is less shade available at site one and, for this reason, it’s a better option to visit in the late afternoon when the heat has gone from the day. There’s also the added bonus of catching an outstanding sunset from the highest point of the site.
Great mysterious place. Take a private tour to hear some great stories!
Really impressive. The jars are huge and quite mysterious. Also there are many craters from bombs that pocket the landscape...it's like an art museum/war memorial, very intense but beautiful.
Plain of jars itself is an interesting sight but not really as impressive as expected and lacked information. But Phonsavan itself is a rip off and quite expensive to get to and from. Accomdation is also very expensive for incredibly basic rooms.
Must see if you are in luang prabang, 30mind lao skyway fly here instead of take the long bus. Mysterious stone jars.
