Phu Salao, Golden Buddha, Pakse

4.3
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Pakse
Perched high on Salao Hill, the impressive Phu Salao, Golden Buddha surveys the panoramic landscape of the region. Part of Phu Salao Buddhist temple complex, the summit can be reached by ascending a multitude of steep steps (note that these are poorly maintained) for the more athletic travelers, or by a road that winds around the hill to the site. Look out for other small golden Buddha statues, neatly arranged nearby. Consider heading up to watch the sunset over Pakse from this spot, and be sure to bring your camera along. • It's not far from the city, but I chose to sit tuk tuk, 80000KIP. Uphill road is not easy to go, the next few steps will slide a little bit, to hand and use, do not recommend days to go up, will be more dangerous gold Buddha is very big, feel very good. There is a panoramic view of the bridge and the beautiful sunset. It's a bit hard, but it's worth it.

  • A must see - beautiful views of Pakse city overlooking the river. The giant golden Buddha sits on top of a hill with a temple. It is only a kilometre from the city, but is about 5 kilometres by tookto...  more »
  • I went all the way. Nice walk along the Mekong River, over the bridge and up a steep trail with varying step. Buddhaen is really great. The sun goes down over the hills on the horizon, unfortunately not over the Mekong River. After that it otherwise is not new to find in Pakse, it's a nice ride. Rain with about 2 hours.

  • This Wat has a huge Golden Bhudda located on the hill. You will see the Pakse city when you are in front of Bhudda.
  • Wat Phu Salao has a quiet big Golden Bhudda and high hill able to view the whole city, especially at night time.
  • This peak with its large golden Buddha statue at its apex is a great place for a panoramic view back across the Mekong to Pakse, and beyond. The peak can be seen easily from Pakse Township and a visitation will entail crossing the bridge to the western bank of the river. If you are planning to go up there to catch the sunset, you are well advised to take a flashlight because the descent may end up being done in the dark. Such is the distance from the carpark to the top. The lower section of the trail to the top has well-constructed cement steps but this eventually gives way to rickety wooden stairs which needed to be negotiated with care. The hike up is further than it looks. Therefore a reasonable level of fitness is advised as well as enough time to get up and back before darkness falls. The Buddha statue at the top is large and impressive and is part of a temple complex. Whilst there, the temple monks will probably come in small groups to pay their respects to the statue.
