Phu Salao, Golden Buddha, Pakse
(4.3/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
Perched high on Salao Hill, the impressive Phu Salao, Golden Buddha surveys the panoramic landscape of the region. Part of Phu Salao Buddhist temple complex, the summit can be reached by ascending a multitude of steep steps (note that these are poorly maintained) for the more athletic travelers, or by a road that winds around the hill to the site. Look out for other small golden Buddha statues, neatly arranged nearby. Consider heading up to watch the sunset over Pakse from this spot, and be sure to bring your camera along. Put Phu Salao, Golden Buddha and other Pakse attractions into our Pakse family vacation planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • There is some construction going on, but the view is great! Go there at sunset or sunrise. You can take the long stairs or the road with the motorbike or cycle.
  • It is worth climbing the long staircase leading to the Golden Buddha of Pakse (or take carry through the road that goes around the mountain, much longer but much less strenuous;-)), because in cities there's not much else to see .... The view is panoramic, and sunset magical enough. Dozens of golden statues of Buddhas tower atop the hill behind the Big Buddha. A huge gong invites the faithful to prove themselves after a prayer and a propitiatory offering, in the arduous task of producing melodious sounds rubbing their hands in its socket. In the temple, a bonzo pronounce blessings and distributes good luck bracelets to falang (during a poignant ceremony). Although the collection can seem authentic, exudes the same a certain magic.
