Wat Xieng Mouane, Luang Prabang

(4.3/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Wat Xieng Mouane affords visitors a look at an intricately decorated and visually impressive Buddhist temple, its unusual design adorned with paintings reflecting Buddha's life. The monastery dates back to 1879 and runs a UNESCO-funded training program for young monks, teaching woodcarving, painting, and Buddha-casting to help maintain the region's temples. Look out for the structure's notable pillars supporting the front porch area, and be sure to check out the showroom at the site, which displays and sells craft works by the local monks Arrange to visit Wat Xieng Mouane and other attractions in Luang Prabang using our Luang Prabang holiday planner.

  • I visited several times this wat because it is very active. We discovered one evening, drawn to hymns and prayers, sweet and charming atmosphere, that nothing to do with the ceremony of offerings to Monks (see review). We returned called by drum beat which alternated a group of young monks who were offered a beautiful spectacle of percussion. Having the guesthouse almost next door, often went to see the paintings on the façade, inhale the scent of plants or listen to the evening prayers. I liked it much more than the largest and known wat Luang Prabang, I recommend it.

  • The temples are amazing and you can walk around inside of them, where you can see the detailed painting and statues inside. Entry fee is 20,000KIP which isn't too bad.
