Wat Phu, Champasak Town

(4.3/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
History, art, and scenic views await at Wat Phu, World Heritage-listed temple ruins with roots dating back to the 5th century. The hilltop Khmer Hindu site offers excellent vistas of the Mekong River and surrounding nature. The original temple dated from the 5th century, but was later destroyed; the current structure dates back to the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. Take notice of the detailed workmanship visible in the architecture and interior, including intricate lintels, a cliff face Buddha footprint, and boulders carved to resemble elephants and a crocodile. As you explore the complex you will also find a natural spring, believed to produce holy water. • It is heritage area, which already encouraged to go and see it. It isn't anything too impressive, but if you're in Champasak or Pakse is must-see. They are currently restoring an area and we could not go to the Museum for unknown reasons. Even so, and under intense heat, we enjoyed the visit.

  • Very interesting and great that you can just wander around
  • It was fairly easy to get to the temple from Pakse. I hired a motorbike to get there, and all the roads were paved. It wasn't hard to find at all. There was a nominal entrance fee, and the site was extremely well maintained.
  • Beautiful temple complex in Champask well worth the visit. The spring at the top and the different stone carvings are interesting
  • Nice place. Pretty steep steps up to the tempel. Wish I brought my paraglider along. No problem to launch, soare and XC-flying there.
  • If you come to Pakse, Champasak Province, don't miss Wat Phu, a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex in southern Laos. This is one of the great places you shouldn't miss. It's wonderful view and you will appreciate the temples.
