Wat Phu, Champasak Town

Ruin Landmark Must See
History, art, and scenic views await at Wat Phu, World Heritage-listed temple ruins with roots dating back to the 5th century. The hilltop Khmer Hindu site offers excellent vistas of the Mekong River and surrounding nature. The original temple dated from the 5th century, but was later destroyed; the current structure dates back to the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. Take notice of the detailed workmanship visible in the architecture and interior, including intricate lintels, a cliff face Buddha footprint, and boulders carved to resemble elephants and a crocodile. As you explore the complex you will also find a natural spring, believed to produce holy water. • Very interesting and a beautiful plant. An impressive ascent which is rewarded with a beautiful view. From the entrance, there is a convenient shuttle service almost up to the ruins. The 50,000 kip are worth admission.

  • This hidden treasure in Laos deserve more attention. It is a hard climb but worth. A place build before Angkhor in the same style and with a path to Angkhor. People who love culture and history a must...  more »
  • The khmer cradle of civilization. Must do before Angkor, otherwise Vat Phu may seem bland. And yet. This place is magical. This staircase surrounded by frangipani, these old stones, this footprint of Buddha, this hill with this view make this place a spiritual place. 3 h maximum visit. A tuk tuk to 100,000 KIP exaggerated. Parking of scooter to 50,000 KIP. Even with all that we went there and this is interesting.

  • I had a great time there, still a lot of restoration work to do, but the place is amazing.
  • Claim to be 2nd UNESCO world heritage site after Luang Prabang but this place lose its magic by low expertise of management organisation. Admission system is poor, no sign, no instruction, no site plan, no qualitative kind of service in whatever charged 50,000 LAK (7$) We have to stop, paid for a park fee (excluded) get in to buy a ticket which seem nobody care to check it, walk back then get in to found 2nd place where parking fee charged. Walk in with garbage, plastic bags, and most mess to the entrance which well-built since 1,000 years ago. Site was not well preserved in compared with Ankor Wat At sanctuary on top, there is no available sign or location map. Make me wonder what did they done with 50,000 LAK from us. Unluckily, the beautiful of this site had fall by poor management. If well restoration, good management, and fine maintenance - this site is one worth what visit.
  • Excellent place, we had a great time there
  • Visited the temple today and was really disappointed to see that its full of garbage. It can be a beautiful place if the locals will keep it clean. Unfortunately, they didn't. I expected more from a site that is UNESCO protected. It's not as impressive as Angkor Wat, but it is a nice place for a few hours trip.
  • 40 mins from Pakse via rented van with Laotian Thai-speaker driver. One of the landmark in Champasak. Khmer-style temple marked as an UNESCO world heritage site.

Where to stay in Champasak Town

Champasak's only main street in Champasak plays home to most of the area's accommodations. This street stretches on either side of the town's fountain, and runs along the river. Lodgings range from basic homestays and guesthouses to more upscale resorts and hotels. You shouldn't have trouble finding a place to stay in Champasak, unless you come during the Wat Phu Champasak Festival in late January and early February. If all options in town happen to be full, look for more accommodations in the nearby town of Don Daeng.
