Burana Tower, Tokmok

4.1
The last remaining structure of the ancient city of Balasagun, Burana Tower offers a glimpse at a long-lost civilization. The tower was constructed between the 10th and 11th centuries and partially destroyed during an earthquake in the 16th century. Its diminished 25 m (82 ft) height can still be scaled by climbing an internal spiral staircase, leading to a panoramic viewing point. • East of Bishkek by car in the middle of the plain of about an hour alone and built Vrana distinctive Tower. Nicely restored is pretty rough, but the swath of bricks is clean. We can climb up to the top of the Tower, but recommended bring flashlight, black, narrow stairs. View of the plain from the top of the tower and Tian Shan mountains are superb. Open-air museum lined with stone who called bozhi tombstones on the side of the tower.

  • In a country short of historic sites older than a few hundred years, this is a welcome place to connect to Kyrgyzstan's past. While there is not much of a museum facility, there are informational boar...  more »
  • The tower has been rebuilt (destroyed by various invaders) and it is not possible to go up to the top. Take care though as the staircase is narrow (can't pass anyone) and, whilst the steps are OK, the...  more »

  • It's not the easiest place to get to but it's worth the effort. The tower is from the 11th century and a great example of the cultures that lived here a thousands years ago. Most of the rest of the city has either disappeared or is still buried underground. The museum is basic.
  • One of the place that shows you what type of building Kyrgyz people had in 10-11 century. Very beautiful and deserve to be visited. In near museum people will explain you in English, French or even Spanish Kyrgyz history
  • Burana Tower is a large minaret dated of IX AD. The tower, along with grave markers (bal-bals), some earthworks and the remnants of a castle and three mausoleums, is all that remains of the ancient city of Balasagyn, which was established by the Karakhanids at the end of the IX century. Current height of tower is 25 m which is about half less of its original height of 45 m. An external staircase and steep, winding stairway inside the tower enables visitors to climb to the top.
  • This is not just the place or tower, ask around the legends and history. People in nearby villages are very friendly.
  • its very pretty!
