Nikolai Przhevalsky Museum, Karakol

4.3
Learn about a great Russian geographer who first described Central Asia when you visit Nikolai Przhevalsky Museum, a neo-classical single-story building detailing the life of the explorer who died of typhoid fever on the shores of Issyk-Kul. Opened in 1957, the museum features sketches of local peoples, engravings, and books with details of Przhevalsky's expeditions shown on a bas relief map of Central Asia. A huge globe, an armillary sphere, and a stuffed horse, presumably having belonged to the scientist, are among top exhibits. A live horse is kept in a museum yard under white birch trees. The balcony offers a scenic panorama of nearby ponds. Przhevalsky is buried in the museum's courtyard. • Quaint museum dedicated to the expeditions of Nikolay Przhevalsky. The exhibits are rather cool but the english texts seem to be translated using google translate... So speak to the English-speaking docent/museum staff if you can. She's very earnest. There is also a monument and przhevalsky's tomb in the compound. The monument has been there since 1894 - amazing. Entrance fee to the museum is 70soms. It is 20mins by marshrutka from karakol's toktugula street. Near the museum there is a cemetery and a vantage point to catch a glimpse of issyk-kul.

  • The staging is a little dated, but the story of this exceptional man is absolutely exciting! The documents presented, shared anecdotes are very complete and very interesting. To do without reservations if you are in the area, for a ridiculously low price.
