Altyn Arashan, Karakol

4.9
Set in a dramatic alpine valley, Altyn Arashan offers therapeutic hot spring baths and scenic hiking trails. Part of the Arashan State Nature Reserve, the valley is 2,600 m (8,530 ft) above sea level, framed by rugged peaks that include the 4,260 m (13,976 ft) Pik Palatka. The resort itself is remote and basic, with hot spring water guided into concrete baths within wooden structures. Be prepared for the smell of the sulphur in the baths, which are is reputedly very beneficial for one's health. English language signage is displayed at the baths, detailing the various ailments that can be appeased by the waters. We reached ALTYN ARASHAN after 3 hours of combined military truck van, very bumpy roads and heavy ride consisting of buffeting, but nice scenery (you will cross a forest). Arrived on site, we avoided the spa houses (not really tempting) to take a hike into the mountains along the Valley towards Pik Palatak. Very nice and charming area, bring spare shoes because it's very muddy. Advice, if possible, to climb in the afternoon (you can even walk way) and spend the night there in the yurt camp, will be a great experience.
