Museum of Petroglyphs, Cholpon Ata

(2.9/5 based on 70 reviews on the web)
Examine timeless stone drawings at Museum of Petroglyphs, a huge stone field with thousands of boulders on the northern shores of Lake Issyk-Kul. This stone garden covers 42 hectares (104 acres) and features some 2,000 petroglyphs dating from 800 CE to 1200 BCE. Motifs of sacrifice, hunting scenes, wars, animals, and examples of everyday chores can be seen depicted on stones ranging from 30 cm (11 in) to 3 m (9 ft) in size. Take time to explore the lichen-covered carved stone warriors, tombs, and stone circles. English-speaking guides are available on site.
