Karen Blixen Museum, Nairobi

4.0
#1 of 32 in Museums in Kenya
Famed as the real-life setting of the classic memoir "Out of Africa," Karen Blixen Museum stands frozen in time, a monument to the life and times of the late author. Danish author Karen Blixen lived here from 1913 to 1931, running the property as a vast coffee plantation, from which she took inspiration for her writing upon returning to Denmark. Delve into Blixen's life and times with a guided tour of the house, where many of the rooms feature original decor and props from the book's 1985 movie adaptation. • The existence of an out-of-Africa, the protagonist is a former House into a museum where it is staged. Comment on the inner Guide, entrance fee one by one in the history of the House that are attached and Karen is talking about around the House, and seeing if you dare to enter my entrance fee and do not need. Jeonsimuldo not much, no, coffee had a farm can drink coffee to help you better pull the space is small, a favorite place.

  • I had been very keen to see Karen Blixen's house, as are most visitors to Nairobi. I paid my entry fee USD12 and was then told I needed a guide. I said I preferred to look through the house without a ...  more »
  • Very informative and interesting tour of Karen Blixen's former home at the foot of the Ngong Hills! Gave a sense of how she lived and how the coffee plantation operated, as well as her life in general...  more »

  • If you have read or watched Out of Africa, it's worth a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum at least once. You will receive a guided tour from a knowledgeable guide and get in-depth information about the house and the grounds. The landscaping is pleasant and there is a nice walking trail in the woods. The interior of the house is set up to replicate the way that it looked when Karen lived there. The gift shop is nothing special and over-priced compared to other local vendors.
  • Such a lovely place, expansive with well kept lawns for functions and events. The museum is full of gems rich in history.
  • We asked to go in but 12€ It was enough for us (we were about to depart with not much money). So we rested one hour outside the Park, in front of the house, and none says nothing to us. After One hour a Guardian (female, Little oversized) said to us that if we not pay the ticket , we Will not able to go away (as a menace, prisonners). After ten minute we explained that we rested outside the Park house, in wide space and in front all the staff without none says nothing, She asked 10€ kes ti let leave us away (but without pay the ticket, ad a corruption) Be aware!
  • “A piece of Colonial History” We knew about Karen Blixen. We heard about the book "out of Africa". My brother told us to read it before reaching Kenya, but had not got chance of reading it, before coming to Kenya. So thought about spending some time over there at her house in Nairobi. The entrance fee is bit stiff but a guide comes along with that, these are local students and are knowledgeable. We had a nice young girl with us who took us around and provided a good account of the life of Karen Blixen. It is interesting to imagine the life and time of her. Ms. Blixen sold of the house and left the country. The house was bought back in 1964 by the Danish government, fully restored, created the atmosphere of her time and given to the Kenyan government as an independence gift. We enjoyed the entire compound, the house, out house and the the defunct coffee factory in the other side. The ambience will take you back to almost 100 years. Best to enjoy leisurely.
  • great spot for learning about Karen area and generally Kenya and Africa. cosy place to hang out with friends and family.
