Karen Blixen Museum, Nairobi

4.0
#1 of 32 in Museums in Kenya
Famed as the real-life setting of the classic memoir "Out of Africa," Karen Blixen Museum stands frozen in time, a monument to the life and times of the late author. Danish author Karen Blixen lived here from 1913 to 1931, running the property as a vast coffee plantation, from which she took inspiration for her writing upon returning to Denmark. Delve into Blixen's life and times with a guided tour of the house, where many of the rooms feature original decor and props from the book's 1985 movie adaptation. • Such a peaceful, beautiful home, it was lovely to see the place and learn more about Karen Blixen's life in Kenya. The guides are very well informed and friendly.  more »
  • What an interesting woman Karen Blixen was. We were escorted around by a very informative tour guide and discovered it was here first week - she was excellent! To learn the history and about the gift ...  more »
  • Guide Mary leads me around. She knows everything about something to tell and does so with humor and fun while they are there only 2 months work. The House of the former coffee plantation is as much as possible in the State been reduced from when Karen lived there. The rest I do not in any way disclose otherwise Mary has nothing more to tell

  • If you have read or watched Out of Africa, it's worth a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum at least once. You will receive a guided tour from a knowledgeable guide and get in-depth information about the house and the grounds. The landscaping is pleasant and there is a nice walking trail in the woods. The interior of the house is set up to replicate the way that it looked when Karen lived there. The gift shop is nothing special and over-priced compared to other local vendors.
  • “A piece of Colonial History” We knew about Karen Blixen. We heard about the book "out of Africa". My brother told us to read it before reaching Kenya, but had not got chance of reading it, before coming to Kenya. So thought about spending some time over there at her house in Nairobi. The entrance fee is bit stiff but a guide comes along with that, these are local students and are knowledgeable. We had a nice young girl with us who took us around and provided a good account of the life of Karen Blixen. It is interesting to imagine the life and time of her. Ms. Blixen sold of the house and left the country. The house was bought back in 1964 by the Danish government, fully restored, created the atmosphere of her time and given to the Kenyan government as an independence gift. We enjoyed the entire compound, the house, out house and the the defunct coffee factory in the other side. The ambience will take you back to almost 100 years. Best to enjoy leisurely.
  • Was actually very interesting. You get your own guide who tells you all about Karen & then takes you around her house. We haven't seen 'Out of Africa' the film!! but will now be watching it & now with a new perspective.
  • Perfect place for 'Out of Africa' lovers. Nice gardens and interesting interiors. M. Streep and R. Redford's costumes! 😀
  • Lovely place with a really nice garden and interesting tour (included with the entrance fee).
