Giraffe Centre, Nairobi

4.3
#2 of 133 in Parks in Kenya
Come face to face with some of the region's most endangered giraffes at Giraffe Centre. Established in 1983 as part of a long-serving conservation project to protect the East African Rothschild giraffe, this nonprofit organization provides educational programmes for the young people of Kenya. Entrance fees help support the cause, and you'll get to meet, feed, and even touch these towering creatures from a raised observation platform. A forest trail also provides a pleasant walk through the undergrowth (watch out for the warthogs). If you're feeling thirsty, head to the teahouse for some refreshment amid ambient scenery. • Overall a good experience, met expectations, nothing extraordinary. You do get up close with the giraffes and can even get kissed by one.  more »
  • We went here as a family if 9 months-5 years-10 years-parents, siblings of parents and grandparents. We all loved it.  more »
  • I think the giraffe feeding by tourist should be limited somehow. They give them too much man-made food.  more »

  • The Giraffe Centre is fun because you get up close and personal with the animals, but unless you really want to be up close and personal with tourists, it's hardly worth the time and money. It's definitely one of the premiere locations for international tourists, so only go during a weekday and at non-peak hours to avoid the annoyances. On the up side, the drinks and snacks at the cafe are not overly priced. If anything, things are cheap and it's nice to be able to get a cold drink on a hot day.
  • Only 40 minutes from Nairobi City Centre, Kenya's capital, the Giraffe Centre is a place you can't miss out! Ever kissed a giraffe? You need to visit the place to know the experience and be amazed at how those lovely animals are close to people. The place gives you an opportunity to kiss the giraffes, hug them and feed them too (and the giraffes have different preferences, the guides will enrich you with that information). Its really a wonderful and well conserved place that gives you the natural feeling you have always desired.
  • I have been at Giraffe Centre since I was young, in fifteen years, I have found the feeding to be so calming and peaceful to myself that I always get pulled back every time work gets to be a little too much. The staff are wonderful, the rates are reasonable and the curio shop is also filled with unique items that I enjoy having even as a native. I would, however, suggest better lighting in the children's art gallery.
  • We love this place! Feeding the giraffes (and having one 'kiss' you as it takes food!) are memories that will never be forgotten. Reasonably priced gift shop too. Well worth a visit.
  • Amazing place for family and loved ones. Giraffes are rare animals and you get a day to know about them their favorite food and at times the giraffes lick you as a show of appreciation. Entry fee is inexpensive
