Things to do: sightseeing
A small and historic city, Turkistan has become a major place of pilgrimage, with thousands of Muslims arriving each year to visit its main religious monument. Built under the command of ruler Timur in the late 14th century, the mausoleum holds the remains of Khawaja Ahmad Yasawi, a Turkic poet and Sufi who helped spread Islam among the Turkic-speaking world. Beyond this centerpiece of Turkistan tours, a medieval bathhouse represents a highlight of the well-maintained city streets, as do a number of rustic eateries serving shashlyk. Where to stay in Turkestan

Despite being a popular place of Islamic pilgrimage, Turkistan features relatively few accommodations. Most options lie close to the mausoleum and in a cluster around the main bazaar, all of them pretty basic. They range from slightly larger hotels with restaurants, free Wi-Fi, and standard rooms, to family-run guesthouses offering the same facilities on a slightly smaller scale. Expect to pay extra for a view of the mausoleum from your room.
