Admire a huge independence monument and a stroll around an elevated, marble-paved plateau at Independence Square and Kazak Eli Monument, an impressive memorial complex dominating the landscape of central Astana. The 91 m (298 ft) tall column topped by a gilded statue of the mythical magic bird of happiness, Samruk, overlooks a vast open space with a boulevard traversing it. Sit and chill out on one of the numerous benches--wooden or marble--to take in the spirit of the place. Examine monumental bronze sculptures and elegant marble arches leading to the complex, all of which celebrate Kazakhstan’s independence. Well-lit at night, the square makes a nice spot to view the city skyline. Put Independence Square and Kazak Eli Monument into our Astana tourist route planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Worth a visit this huge square whose greatness is made from the photos that make it look smaller. Modern art fascinating, not to be missed if you are visiting the city. Accessible on the cheap (2 euros) by taxi

  • Located on the east side of the city, this attractions is located close to the pyramid ( in front of it) , the mosque ( on the north side) and the National Museum ( on the south side).
  • Not really worth visiting. Nothing special, just a building. they use it mostly for conferences, the interior of the building is uninspiring.
