Zenkov Cathedral, Almaty
(4.6/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Located in Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral represents a rare religious structure made entirely out of wood, without any nails or metal components. Built in the late 19th century, the tall cathedral was used as a museum after the Communist revolution, but the Russian Orthodox Church restored its original purpose and publically reopened it in 1997. Explore the lavish Tardis-like interior assembled by artists and carpenters from Moscow and Kiev, and absorb the atmosphere infused with quiet religious chants and burned incense. Inspect the sacred relics and frescoes, along with elaborate gold and pearl paintings of the Virgin Mary. Respect the dress code during your visit. • If you have time during your stay please do not hesitate to visit this wood made Church.2 sessions a day one in the morning one in the evening.
  • A wooden church in the middle of a park. Pretty and colourful from outside and good views from all around. Loved the open place on one side with lots of pigeons being fed by kids. Worth a short trip

  • Constructed inside one of the largest parks in Almaty this wooden Cathedral is testament to the work of its architect. It was designed to withstand the earthquakes in the region & it has done so on many occasions. Supposedely built of wood without the use of nails, it prsents an impressive sight amongst the greenery of the park. While the exterior is impressive, the interior is even more beautiful, with icons & Christian imagery abounding. The reverential silence inside the building serves to enhance the ambience. Votive candles & other religious items are available in the foyer, along with souvenirs. Highly recommended.
  • This is, for me, the quintessential orthodox church. It was being lovingly maintained by parishioners while I visited. There's a curio shop at the entrance that sells iconography, but you need cash. They have some gorgeous stuff. The grounds surrounding it are also spectacular. Highly recommend!
  • One of the nicest churches that I have been in terms of the outer appearance, and the surrounding area.

  • Just on the edge of the park. This gorgeous building is a must see in my opinion
