Tamgaly Tas, Almaty

4.5
Ponder over large enigmatic drawings at Tamgaly Tas, an ancient carved-stone World Heritage Site featuring some 5,000 petroglyphs dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. An open-air gallery of rock drawings, the gorge features images of animals and scenes of everyday life from the period, as well as images of Buddha and prayers carved in Tibetan, Kalmyk, and other languages. Distributed along several smaller canyons, petroglyphs can be found in several burial mounds and tombs showing life scenes of pastoral people. Go prepared to hike--the main rocks are a 15-minute walk from the nearest parking. Put Tamgaly Tas on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Almaty trip planner .

  • Building of Almaty there is a wonderful place to visit Kazakhstan residents and tourists. It is not only a natural and historical phenomenon, but also the cultural heritage of our country. We always visit the banks of the river Or in March and October, because in the desert is not as hot as summer. This location is approximately 70-80 km away from the town, looking at what the banks to stay. Love these places and fishermen and tourists. Once for the filming of "nomads" there was built a castle-medieval style decoration East. It became known as the castle of Nomad, he loved everything that was used and further filming clips, films, and at other times as an open-air museum. One day we visited it, when there was no filming and all carefully considered. And this time accidentally hit on the filming of the movie "the Kazakh Khanate". It was very interesting to see the process of creating the film. Moreover, we managed to relax on the banks of the river and had a picnic, and also enjoyed a view of the flora and fauna of the autumn steppe. Seen herds of horses, camels, and vacationers in the river otter swam (May and nutria). The weather was warm, even hot, step numbers. On the opposite shore is seen another great place. It rocks with drawings-petroglyphs-its called Tamgaly TAS.

  • The site preserves numerous petroglyphs, some very fine, placed on ridges of rock collapsed partly executed from the bronze age to the 19th century. The place is isolated from everything, plunged into the steppes and has a special charm. On the site have also been found several ancient tombs and it is thought that the place, precisely because of its isolation and its function was considered sacred.

  • An interesting walk around a number of groupings of ancient petroglyphs. Some can be a scramble to get to but are worth the effort. Lovely wild flowers along the way.  more »
