Tamgaly Tas, Almaty

(4.5/5 based on 45+ reviews on the web)
Ponder over large enigmatic drawings at Tamgaly Tas, an ancient carved-stone World Heritage Site featuring some 5,000 petroglyphs dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. An open-air gallery of rock drawings, the gorge features images of animals and scenes of everyday life from the period, as well as images of Buddha and prayers carved in Tibetan, Kalmyk, and other languages. Distributed along several smaller canyons, petroglyphs can be found in several burial mounds and tombs showing life scenes of pastoral people. Go prepared to hike--the main rocks are a 15-minute walk from the nearest parking. Make Tamgaly Tas a part of your Almaty vacation plans using our Almaty travel itinerary planner.

  • Arrival 3-4 h, departure 3-4 h - da remains not much time for the real attraction. Although for UNESCO World Heritage nothing should be collected, the State enjoys to gamble good since 2016 by every 500 tenge off - the Treasury is empty. But still worth seeing are the petroglyphs in the endless steppe!

  • Kapchagay district from even less than an hour in a taxi. Located on the banks of the river. Tibetan Buddhist murals remain clear. Buddha, several Buddha figure is depicted in the rock beneath was inscribed with Tibetan characters. Access is difficult (often that local taxi drivers do not know the way), the Temple of love please come look at. From Almaty is available one day.

  • A place to say, of course, exceptional. In terms of historical value no questions. Beautiful pictures, beautiful views. But you can get there only with a guided tour or on your car. And in any case will have at least a couple of hours drive along flooded highways, then pylit′ on the dirt road. Food and drinks of course carry. Walked, looked pofotografirovalis′, eat a little, pylim back:-) The trip takes a full day, relax in nature-not bad.
