Church
Feel the tranquility and light a candle at St. Nicholas Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church in Almaty’s Almaly district. Set in a small green park with ornate gilt domes contrasting with white and pale cyan walls, the building's interior features elaborately painted walls, ceiling, and icons. You can also admire the relics of 20 different saints in the church. A similarly painted Sunday school, a library, and a reception hall stand adjacent to the cathedral, with a life-size statue of St. Nicholas next to the stairs leading to the main entrance. Having served in the past as a museum of atheism and a stable, the church has been reopened to worshippers since 1980. A visit to St. Nicholas Cathedral represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Almaty vacation route planner to plot your vacation.

  • History of the Cathedral begins in the year 1904 when the inhabitants of verny (formerly Almaty) began raising funds for its construction. December 14, 1908 onwards the Church was consecrated. Construction used Tian-Shan FIR. The temple survived the devastating earthquake of the year 1911.

  • Situated in one of the many parks in Almaty, this venue is a fine example of Eastern Orthodoxy in a building. The exterior is exquisite in its features but the interior will take your breath away. I visited this location on a tour with the Almaty City Tours Company and their guide provided an excellent background of the building to me. Highly recommended.
  • Beautiful Cathedral! Ringer-a good egg to hear bells straight fun!
