Kolsai Lakes, Almaty

4.9
#3 of 6 in Nature in Almaty
Take a drive up to Kolsai Lakes, three alpine lakes nestled among the dramatic cliffs and fir forests of the Tian Shan mountain range. Six hours away from Almaty, the road leading to the lake area is bumpy but scenic, passing vast steppes and canyons. Explore the picturesque landscape of the hiking trails around the lakes, go fishing for trout, camp out, or visit a lakeside guesthouse. On a warm summer day, cool off with a dip in the lakes' clear, placid waters. To visit Kolsai Lakes on your trip to Almaty, use our Almaty trip itinerary maker tool .

  • My daughter and I decided the sedit. Having considered the calendar of excursions from Almaty, we realized that it is not for us. Because all organized tours leave from the city in the evening, the night go to Saty and automatic in the morning on the Lake. And from the first to the second Lake distance 10 km longer and quite challenging trail and recent 2.5 km go uphill at an angle a little Lin 30grd. So not really spavshi this walk becomes a torture. So we took a private tour with the company "Kolsay Lakes" and have donated. Worth it of course certain money, but we went in Friday morning and by 12-TI were on lakes. On the road the driver delivered will us in various places and much talked about his native province. The driver name is Gani (if that body-h + 77714002953). In addition this tour we do not overlap with the flow of tourists who priejezhajut on the weekend on buses from the city, so everyone saw in a calm atmosphere. The first Lake took horses and with a guide reached the second Lake is an unforgettable experience, considering that I first time sat in the saddle. But later I realized that without horses is unlikely to be reached by foot, probably on the floor of the road turned around. Praising the Saty and local we at local Jeep (UAZ made in USSR) were at Lake Kiindy, very beautiful. On the way back stopped to charyn konen, the road bought honey and a local drink drank. So individual tour proved to all 100%.

  • Unfortunately it was misty but still quite nice! Areas around the lake should be developed. Toilets were deplorable.  more »

  • Kolsai is a succession of 3 alpine lakes between altitudes of 1700 – 2650m. The 3 lakes are exceptionally clear and lie in an idyllic location, surrounded by massive cliffs and mountains with snowy caps and wooded slopes. Seeing how it is a long way there, it is good to take at least 2 days (3 days for those who know how to relax) to enjoy the place. Kolsai lakes combines beautifully with Charyn Canyon. The Kolsai lakes are supremely suited to hiking and horse riding. You can rent out horses for the day to take you up from Kolsai 1 up to Kolsai 3. If you go hiking, take the path right of Kolsai 1 for a 9km hike to the middle lake at 2250m (the most beautiful one in my opinion). Then take the path left of Kolsai 2 for another strenuous 6km to reach the top lake at 2650m.
  • Kolsay Lakes National Park is located on the north slope of the Tian Shan Mountains, southeast Kazakhstan. Often referred to as "Pearls of Tien Shan", the park's main feature are the Kolsay Lakes located between the Raiymbek District and Talgar District of Almaty Region. The scenic Lake Kaindy is also within the park. The park boundary is 120 kilometres (75 mi) southeast of Almaty. Kolsay Lakes are one of the most beautiful places of Kazakh nature. They are also called the blue necklace of the Northern Tien Shan. It is understandable - you do not meet such beauty everywhere! Translated from the Kazakh language, " Kolsay" means "a lake in the gorge," because all three lakes are in the picturesque gorge of the eastern part of the Kungei Alatau Ridge, which is 300 km from Almaty.
