A landmark of the former capital, Almaty City Central Mosque stands out as the biggest mosque in Kazakhstan, capable of accommodating up to 7,000 people. Completed in 1999, this marble-plated structure built in a Timurid style of architecture features a 36 m (118 ft) tall gilt dome surrounded by four small minarets and a 47 m (154 ft) tall main minaret. An impressive entrance gate adorned with blue tiles leads into a spacious hall, decorated with verses from the Qur’an in Ottoman Arabica style. Located in the downtown area near a bazaar, the mosque covers 0.95 ha (2.3 ac), creating a pleasant atmosphere in which to walk.   • Free entrance close to the bazaar and city. Nice place where everyone is allowed to visit- have headscarf ready and understand that since it is a mosque, there is a dress code.  more »
  • The mosque is open to all, though modest clothing is required. Scarfs for women are available for free at entrance, no short for men, if you intend to enter the mosque. You can take pictures as much a...  more »
  • Performed my solat for the day at this mosque. It was winter and good to have warm water to do my ablution. Big prayer hall.  more »
